Guest guest
Well hurry it up !!! I am going to be needing the 100's materials soon!!! :-)I bought mine in Boston, directly from btw- I have the Home Kit and "Teaching number skills to children with Down syndrome using the Numicon Foundation Kit " It really explains the why's along with the hows. Unless I missed it, I didn't see that the number line was included in that kit, I do have one in mine and I think it's *very* necessary so I would double check and order one if it's not included. Kathy R ( the other one... rumble) you should chime in here as you explained it's use very clearly to me in Boston! It was such a pleasure meeting you too!!! You have lots of great insight, please share!Carol in ILMom to , 8 DS My problem is not how I look. Guest guest
I love the numicon for my son, and I just recieved news from the school yesterday that they were approved for a grant to get it for my son's school. They will be ordering it next week! So that is always an altermative to using the numicon if you don't have the funds for it. Another school in our district got it last year for a girl with down syndrome, I mentioned that the school had it and they went and watched it being used and loved it not just for NIck but other children struggling in math. It seems cheaper than touchmath, and I have not heard too many say that was successful, but I don't know that many people. I think my son would not get past 10 with touchmath, because I could see him thinking the 14 was 5 (one dot for the 1 and 4 dots for the 4 is 5 together) The only problem I see with the school using it is that you really need to have a kit to use at home, right now the school uses most of my stuff and I have the pieces I need at home. I miss my kit at home, but now that the school is getting one, they will be sending my home. Yeah! It was a great activity over the summer. I don't remember exactly what was in the home kit, but I do think it was missing a few key items, that I use for Nick, but it was a great kit to start with.I like the book that Carol is referring to and there is also a book from Downsed that is very helpful, that I could get back to you later if you are interested in it as well. I think you need the Foundation Activity cards to start out with. They are easy to follow. I like the overlays for the baseboard as well because that helped with the visual perception problems as well. www.dsfoc.org has a few numicon math sheets on their website you can download as long as a number line up to 10. I use a whiteboard with a numberline on it I got from lakeshore learning on sale. It is up to 20 and has a space to write the problems as well. Nick will find the first number of the addition problem, count out the next number and then circle the answer. It is very important to do other activities than the numicon and the regular numberline is a good tool. Kit 1 has a numberline to 21 showing the numicon pieces and a tens numberline to 100, but you can't write on them.. Carol, you had a teens board that I printed from you while ago and that worked with numicon as well. I ordered kit 1 with the foundation activities over a year ago because I was clueless as what to order. I think the Closing the Gap product looks very interesting. I learned the key to numicon is getting familiar with the shapes and putting them to the number. You can go at any pace you need to with your child and after you become confident with using them, it becomes a fun activity. Nick never sees it as work. We have put the pieces in beans and had him find them and match them to the numbers or the number words. My son is still very young, (he is in first grade) so we still have a long way to go in math. I can see using numicon for place value and a few other key concepts. I hope you will continue to post your success with numicon! It seems like a product with so many potential fun activites, and Carol you would be a perfect person to share this information. You have provided so many great worksheets and at home activies. And you are so creative we could continue to learn form you. Guest guest
Hope, I will try to get more information to you about the details of the grant. I supplied the following information to the school and the VP wrote the grant. It was actually the school's idea to do this. Here are the 3 articles that were used to help write the grant for our school. http://www.down-syndrome.org/practice/2018/practice-2018.pdfhttp://www.down-syndrome.org/information/number/overview/?page=4http://www.down-syndrome.org/updates/352/updates-352.pdf I was told by someone else that PTA has grant money and supply money and that is also a good source. Kathy Subject: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Re: numiconTo: DownSyndromeInfoExchange Date: Saturday, November 1, 2008, 6:29 AM Thanks everyone for the info. Kathy can you explain how the school went about getting a grant for the numicon. Who was it through?Hope
