Hi,

We have had the same issue with Charlie's Dr.  The answer has been- " I'm sorry

about your prognosis " and " Let me just monitor you " .  We have had one Dr. tell

you a year ago that Charlie had 1 1/2 to 2 years.  We are the type that want to

have as much information as possible-good, bad or otherwise.  I'm not sure why

some Drs. are reluctant to say.

A lot of our knowlege is been through our own research.

Yes, Jerry, I understand your question and I understand why you want to know.

The truth is, we don't really know.  However, judging from what you have said

and based upon what my husband's doctor told us, I would say maybe 3 years or

less.  That's not a medical opinion, just mine and I'm sure not a medical

professional.  I know a man who has been actively dying for over 2 months now.

I mean, he's weaker every day, he's unresponsive, has lost over 200 pounds and

yet, he's still alive.  My own husband was told last Oct that he had at the

mosts 6 months.  That has been 13 months ago and he's still alive, and not just

alive, but alert for the most part,, able to get up and walk around the house

and talks to his Mom on the telephone almost every night.  So, you see, it

really is very hard to say.  Our bodies are amazing machines and can keep

puttering along even when we think it won't.  I'm sorry I can't give you more

specific information, but

there's just so much we know as humans.  Life is in the hands of the Giver of

Life.  Ultimately, only He knows when the end will come.  I hope you can find

some peace with your circumstances.  You are in my prayers.

Diane

Hi, Jerry. I guess I kinda understand. You can live a long time with a severly

damaged liver. It all depends how functional the liver stays. Kind of like

driving a car to Fresno with a blown head gasket. You could stop every few miles

and keep filling up the water in the radiator, but sooner or later those

cylinders are going to freeze up. The person would just be better off to have a

new engine or cylinder head put in , regardless of the $1000 price tag. We are

like that I think. You can live with cirrhosis, but sooner or later you will

decompensate, swell up, start bleedin, catch the flu, something. A transplant

gives you a chance, just a chance to circumvent all of these complications. It

could also kill you. Transplants are very risky in themselves. A lot of

hepatologists would rather see you live with the liver you got as long as

possible. Thats what my hepatologist is telling me. This doctor who avoids the

subject, is it a hepatologist??? cause if

it is anything but a transplant hepatologist, at a major hospital, I think that

right there explains it all. You would be surprised how much a lot of regular

doctors don't know very much about liver disease. My regular doctor admits to

my face that she just doesn't know that much about it. She knows the basics, but

when I see her and explain what they told me over at the university, she just

nods, and goes " hmmmm... ok, hmmmmmm, ok, i see. " The only reason I keep seeing

her is that she doesnt try to BS me and tell me lies. Bobby

long life, old age, everything good-Apache prayer

Hi Jerry, I understand the question. My hubby  had maybe 3 months at the most to

live. You know when they tell you to get your sh** in order, it is almost the

end. Reality check there. But, he chose to try to get on a transplant list, and

changed his life. He was a heavy drinker all his life. That is all he knew to

do. But, he changed, and I am glad he did. Life ain't ove rif you don't drink

anymore. You lose all your friends you thought you had, but you make new ones.

It ain't over til fat lady sings. Only you can make that decision. NO ONE else

can. Choose life. Sue
