It depends on what his/her predominant symptoms are. Our son was a

little younger (12yo), but we had neuropsychological, speech and

occupational therapy evaluations done--all with people who specialize

in autism. He is Asperger with developmental coordination disorder

and anxiety. He's also seen a psychiatrist for the anxiety, and of

course it all starts with an educational evaluation. For kids with

more subtle or hard-to-diagnose symptoms, Texas Children's recommended

the ADOS/ADI-R. That is an evaluation specifically for autism; it is

probably the most detailed. There aren't a lot of people licensed to

give it, and it is hard to find someone who takes your insurance.

I think some of the diagnosticians would use the DSM4. I am old school. The testing I saw they had used at the school for this particular guy was Woodcock- III Test of Achievement and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-Second Edition (WIAT-II). There were huge discrepencies between the two. There are problems with speech, social language. It seemed to me some other testing should of been done. I think going outside of the school for testing is the thing to do, although this particular student could be graduating in the spring. The information I would also use for future reference. Thanks for everyone's input.

Here are the tests when we began our journey in 2002!

VINELAND ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR SCALES (VABS)

BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR CHILDREN (BASC)

CHILDHOOD AUTISM RATING SCALE

WECHSLER INTELLIGENCE SCALE FOR CHILDREN - III

WOODCOCK-JOHNSON III TESTS OF COGNITIVE ABILITIES

These were administered by a Psychologist because the school district

found my son to be " typically devloping " even when he would

fixate/perservate on unusual issues/items.

Getting the school on board will be difficult if your child is

passing/excelling academically. It is possible to unitlize the NCLB

legislation to your advantage in certain areas. RtI is the response

to intervention that will look at academics AND behaviors. You will

want to look at the childs social abilities next.

Is your child engaged with friends outside of school?

Is your child part of a social network?

Does your child speak of " friends " in school?

Those kinds of questions. Our educational system still waits for

kids to fail so any documentation you can provide will help.

Good luck and feel free to email offline...

PS...my son was 7 in 2002 and he is now 13.

What does it mean if your child tests positive for AD0S but main diagnosis is ADHD combined with expressive speech disorder as secondary diagnosis?Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TFrom: "r_woman2" Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2008 10:55:59 -0000To: <Texas-Autism-Advocacy >Subject: Re: diagnosing > > I would like to know what testingwould beused for a high school student with some autism traits? It means someone did not give the child the correct label of Autism

Spectrum Disorder.
