Here is another family who opened their own school, perhaps you could contact them for advice.

Does anyone know what it would take to open our own school for our ASD children? I know a little bit about starting a 501 non-profit but as far as the school regulations, does anyone know where you have to get that info? IS it from TEA? I am so sick of the school district and the failures my son has to go through over and over again. He is in 9th grade and still at a Pre-K level even though he is smart as heck because the school keeps trying to place him in classrooms that are not conducive to his learning abilities. I figure it would be easier to open a school for these children so they can have a place where they can get ABA and other education specifically geared for ASD children.Any help would be great.

The founders of The Monarch School felt much the same as you 11 years ago. Please check out our web site. We would be happy to talk with you about starting a school. We helped a group open one up in Guatemala two years ago.

Nothing would make us happier than to have more schools equipped to serve children on the spectrum.

I know it is a lot of work, but I would like something that can

accomodate everyone- no matter what issues they have. I want only the

most caring people who are willing to go that extra mile to make sure

these kids get all they need. I would like ABA, OT, AT, PT, and

speech all available...that may have to come later. Mostly, I want a

safe environment where the kids can learn without the parents feeling

their children may get sent to ISS, get tickets, go to jail, get

suspended for the behaviors that they cannot control.

I live in where another family opened a school for younger

children. I am going to try to get in touch with them. It is great

for the younger kids to be able to have a good place to start out,

but as I have a high school kid, we need something for the older

ones. The high schools just don't like to have to accomodate them. We

have wasted all of this year so far in fights with the school...my

child has learned nothing.

I know tuition is usually high for private schools, what I am hoping

is to do it with donations, grants, govt funding, etc...those who can

pay something, can do a sliding scale...those who cannot, can get a

scholarship.

I know we can't afford a private school for my son and that's why we

are stuck in public school.

Sorry it is so long. I appreciate everyone's comments and support.

Looked up info on the charter school. Looks like we would have to get

the current school district to approve it. Do we think they would? I

was a little confused on the type of charter schools there were but I

guess with a little more research this could be attainable. Anyone

else know anything about charter schools?

I have long wanted to open a private school and thought a charter

school would be the way to go...until I really started researching

the issue. That is yet another system in Texas that needs an

overhaul! TEA has made it so difficult to start up a charter (they

give out very, very few charters each year), there is so much

oversight, they are required to have the same standards, testing,

etc. as a regular public school, they will not allow a charter for a

specific population of kids (no special needs charters!), and they

provide such a low amount of money for start up and ongoing

support...well, I think it just can't be done well given all of the

restrictions.

In theory, a charter school would be a great solution, especially for

families due to the tuition issue, but not so much for those trying

to operate the school and who really want to do right by their

students. I wish they would rethink that system!

I'm sure you have thought of this already but just in case you haven't:

Why couldn't you start this as a homeschool? Homeschools in Texas are considered private schools. Private schools in Texas do not have to be accredited, the state has no say on the type of curriculum you use nor do you have to give any kind of TAKS - TEKS type tests and give the results to the state. You could charge an amout to pay for tutors or whomever you want to hire for certain subjets or services. If you need to rent a building then those costs need to be figured in. Actually, someone on the list may have a building you can rent for a good price(you never know). Anyone who wants to send their child will have to pay (naturally) a price but that is to pay for the things needed to open the school and keep it running.

Dee C

I had thought about going this way, too, but my district would never approve it especially given the nature of our present relationship.
