Vitamin K can be administered orally and really is not needed if the cord is not clamped and cut right away-google Vitamin K and there are tons of articles regarding Vitamin K in newborns and the info regarding the shot. Not sure about the drops-my kiddos were always given an oinment-not drops. But my last baby was Group B Strep positive so...

I would call the state regarding the mandates-a lot of people read the mandates wrong. A lot of times they are mandated to OFFER the shot, not administer it.

I think it's the Dept of Health and Human Services. They were very helpful when we moved here from CA regarding getting our waivers for the vaccines. You guys shouldn't have any problems getting the info you need, especially if you already have the code.

My brother and sister-in-law wish to decline not only the HepB for their baby who will be born this month, but also wish to decline the Vitamin K shot and the eye drops.

They were told by their OB that they can be reported to child protective services and also that it is state mandated (they live in Temple, TX) and that it is a misdemeanor if you refuse! I am thinking there is some information they are not being given- a waiver that is available perhaps? The code they were given regarded the eye drops is:

Birth Exemptions:

For those who are planning a hospital birth but want to evade invasive routine

post natal

procedures such as a Hep B shot, vitamin K injection, newborn screening, or the

application of silver nitrate in the newborn's eyes, a very specific birthing

plan must be

submitted to the hospital in advance of the birth. Hospital staff must be

informed, in

advance, of your needs, wants and desires where your baby and birthing

experience are

concerned. The same applies to midwives.

The prescribing information on Vitamin K shot states that fatalities are an

Alternatives to Vitamin K Prophylaxis...

Although oral vitamin K is not licensed for use as a drug by the FDA, drops for

oral

administration are available. Typically, one drop contains 2 mg. of vitamin K.

midwife in your area, or a birthing supply company (such as birthwithlove.com),

or

Scientific Botanicals (206 527-5521) where your health care provider can order

liquid

vitamin K directly.

Most states now require the Hepatitis B vaccine for newborns. Many parents are

cornered by emergency room personnel during accident visits. Hospitals

under pressure to utilize every opportunity to score a " hit. " If your

pediatrician

understands your views, get him involved with the hospital. As a last resort,

protect your

right to receive quality care in the following manner. (Usually, you'll never

There is NO statute requiring hep b at birth – just 3 doses of hep b by

kindergarten and

then they have the conscientious exemption. They can just say no at birth but

they have to

be careful not to sign a consent form buried in the admission paperwork. They'll

never

bring it up if someone signs that – they just give the shot and most parents

never realized

they signed it. Even people who have said no still have realized their kids got

the shot

when they get the bill. I tell parents have someone you trust there to stay with

the mom

and the dad's job is to follow that baby everywhere and never let it leave their

sight until

they are out of the hospital.

TB can be detected by biofeedback machines that are hooked up to a computer,
