Guest guest
Thanks Abijann as always for the insight and wonderful information. I remember once when my daughter was sick and the doctor told me to watch for dehydration and what to do. But when reading here I wondered if adults could be treated the same way? To prevent dehydration I gave her Popsicles. (no sugar kind). They were cold and of course were made of ice. I've never had to use pedialyte. At the first onset of diarrhea I would give her ice chips or Popsicles. Now it didn't help her get over her sickness, but she didn't get dehydrated. Now, of course it's much different with an adult with a disease, but ice chips I think can help until a medical evaluation is completed. I think with Insoon, I was also told to make sure if she showed signs of dehydration (when she was given diuretics) to slowly hydrate with only spoonfuls of water or ice chips. That's true, right? Slowly hydrate? MaC abijann <no_reply > wrote: Someone who has diabetes I do not believe should try to use a homemade solution.. They should go to the emergency room to be treated. For those who don't have a problem with diabetes or are on a low sodium diet...this homemade solution " may be " okay. Some people use gatorade for adults or pedialyte for children. Here is a homemade solution...However, it should never be given to someone under 12 years of age: Measure all ingredients precisely. Small variations can make the drink less effective or even harmful. Mix the following: 1 quart (950 ml) water ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt, or ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute (such as " Lite Salt, " which is potassium-based) 3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 g) sugar Rest and take it easy for 24 hours, and continue to drink a lot of fluids. Although you will probably start feeling better within just a few hours, it may take as long as a day and a half to completely replace the fluid that you lost. This recipe is taken from the internet...However, I know some who have used it. The electrolyte balance needs to be looked at during this time... that is why it is very crucial to take the patient to the hospital, so blood work can be done. They will watch the levels of this in their blood there and be sure to stablize the patient.
