Guest guest
Well, this is the first chance I've had to write about 's 15th birthday weekend! Saturday the announcer at his Pop Warner Challenger Football Game announced it was "Number 36, McElwee's birthday' after the game ended...as walked past the 'typical' team who was about to play they all High 5'd and Knuckled him and said 'Happy Birthday'...and we went home to final preparations for the party that was to begin 2 hours later... 3:00 the giant inflatable water slide was being delivered to unseasonably cold (63 degrees) weather while it was RAINING! (it never rains in California!) I decided the kids would be wet anyway so go ahead and set it up! at 4, they began to arrive...first here was 's friend from 2nd grade who has never missed a birthday party. doesn't have any sort of disability, but is still 's friend after all these years...and knew best what to get him as a gift---movie tickets to see High School Musical 3! 20 more teens, who all have a variety of disabilities arrived, including Shanel...'s crush...he has it bad for her (she has DS too) came about 30 minutes late...'s friend since 1st grade, also no disability... and jumped right into the poker table and began to teach 's other party goers the finer points of playing poker! One party goer on the Autistic Spectrum refused to play, 'That's gambling' he said. I told him, 'It's only gambling when you buy the chips and win or lose money...when it's at a party it's just a game.' He didn't believe me. They played pool, darts, guitar hero and danced in our garage, while being chaperoned by a 19 year old I paid...the parents were drinking in the backyard! It was a dual party. After the burgers and hot dogs were eaten, the candles blown out and cake served started opening the 22 presents which consisted mostly of Gift cards! And he opened and opened and opened. His friend Ben spent the night but everybody else went home and from what I've heard haven't stopped talking about 's party. (I had a 16 year old neighbor help me make the music mix on the IPOD and we let them play it too loud..hey we were in the backyard and couldn't hear a thing!) Monday was his 'actual' birthday. One of his grandmothers sent a card and a $50 ITunes Card. opened it and can you believe he got choked up! He started bawling and said, 'I have the BEST family!' Rick came into the room and he hugged us both and said, 'You are the BEST parents in the world.' THAT was MY birthday present! THEN today he came home with a hat...turns out the football team at school found him during snack and gave him a really nice logo'd hat that only the football team has AND sang Happy Birthday to him! He is so proud of that hat! He was supposed to be an assistant to the football team, but the coach said 'no'. Pretty interesting the team has adopted him anyway! , Mom to 15, DS, Southern CaliforniaTo succeed in life, you need three things:a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.~ Reba McIntyre Diagnosis Down Syndrome: A Site of Hope for New Parents or Parents with a Prenatal Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/What to Say to Parents of a Child with a Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/speech.html

Guest guest
Thank you for this great story , Where in South Carolina are you from? Guest guest
Are you kidding, he already has 16 planned....he wants to RENT A LIMOSINE and take 9 of his friends to see the taping of Deal or No Deal in LA, THEN go out to dinner in LA with movie stars, like Zach Efron and the rest of the HSM cast! --if I can get a limo for $200 (what I paid for the water slide)then it's a go! IF NOT Then we'll rent a van and take them up. I'm spoiling him aren't I?
