Guest guest
Joanne- I know alot of kids who are on the ketogenic diet- successfully. I know it is alot of work and you have to be very precise in measurement- And it will feel like isn't eating much at all. (There is very little food) I have never heard of someone so young on the diet though. The youngest I heard was about 2 yrs. ( I come across this alot at work- I work in a Ped's office) The thing you test for is ketones and you will have to test frequently for them- It is a urine test. The ketones always have to be in the high range for this to work. I found some good links for you... FAQ KetoDiet Ketogenic Diet Good Luck! Guest guest
Joanne - hi... I'm also still nursing my child. She's 17 1/2 mos. old , & I haven't a clue when I'm going to start weaning her. She has Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Syndrome, & has difficulty in drinking fluids. She's always had a pretty decent suck, & I don't want to mess with what works... < grin > She drinks out of an open cup, but alot of it doesn't get into her... Anyway, I don't blame you, as far as the nursing issue is concerned. How bad are 's seizures ? I had heard, that some doctors feel that the high fat content of breast milk keeps some seizures at bay !!! Now I'm TOTALLY confused... Have you tried ACTH ? Crys was put on ACTH when she was about 5 1/2 - 6 mos. old, & the seizures were eradicated within the 1st week... If that didn't work, I've heard alot of good things about Vigabatrin.I've heard that kids like ours ( with brain abnormalities ) do very well on it...I'm a true believer in the benefits of mother's milk, so I don't blame you for being skeptical. Good luck in making your decision. Take care & God bless. - Mommy of Crystal Aquielle - CBPS & cute as a button...
Guest guest
Joanne, > it better be a miracle worker in order for me to stop giving > all the benefits of breastfeeding. I mean the kid has never been > sick-no real colds, no fevers, nothing, and I'd like to think that it has > something to do with all the immunity that I'm giving him. I couldn't agree with you more, ILS hasn't had any sickness that has warranted concern yet. Seeing how sick a lot of the ILS Kids get, I'm convinced her still being breast fed has made a big difference. I plan to continue her morning and evening feeds for as long as possible. Another reason I have carried on so long is that I have read that breast milk is better for the growing brain. I am keen to find the research out behind this, and what exactly the effect is on the brain, but despite reading widely haven't found that which supports this theory yet. > I want to do whatever is best but what if I try this diet and it doesn't work? I >don't want to wean him without good reason. Have you first tried any other meds as well? It would seem rather drastic to put on this diet so young, I'm not even sure it's recommended for baby's as they've a delicate body chemistry balance which is easily upset when they are so small. Also I believe that not much weight is gained on this diet, again I wouldn't be convinced this is appropriate for a child of under two years old, especially with our kids who are difficult feeders any way. Besides all this, I'm afraid I am always suspicious of any one who try's to say breast is not best! I hope that 's seizures lessen and he continues to feed better, so that these worries are taken away! Guest guest
Sally - I told Joanne pretty much the same thing. I'm also still nursing Crystal... She's almost 18 mos. It makes me feel better to hear from a mom, who's still nursing her child at the age of 2 !!! I also, have heard about the supposed benefits of breastmilk on the developing brain. I'm hoping to be able to nurse her until she's at least 2 years old... If you do find out any info on this subject, please let me know... Take care & God bless...
