Ketogenic diet

Hi all,

I need some input. We started on Klonopin recently. He started

with .25mg 3x a day. He was having feeding problems so we reduced the dosage

to .25 2x a day. There was little change so we reduced again to .25mg each

day(1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm). His sucking reflex was better and his

appetite was back. Now we're seeing seizures again. The doctor told us to

increase the evening dosage to .25mg which I just started tonight. He's had

more seizures throughout this evening. The doctor also said to increase the

morning dosage if he doesn't improve.

The doctor also has suggested the ketogenic diet. Does anyone have any

experience with this? All I know is that it is a high fat no carbs diet that

creates a substance in the body that maybe effective in treating seizures.

He also said that I would have to stop breastfeeding in order to impliment

the diet. Now it's interesting to me that the doctor wants to try a non-drug

solution but it better be a miracle worker in order for me to stop giving

all the benefits of breastfeeding. I mean the kid has never been

sick-no real colds, no fevers, nothing, and I'd like to think that it has

something to do with all the immunity that I'm giving him.

Anyway, I'm interested in your comments/suggestions. We are going to admit

into the hospital next week to do the 24 hr. video EEG. I told the

doctor that we could discuss our options then. Of course I want to do

whatever is best but what if I try this diet and it doesn't work? I don't

want to wean him without good reason.
