Less than a month ago I got a horrible high pitched sound through thephone at work. I guess I don't have to tell this group what that feltlike. Within an hour I was unable to bear answering the phone andthat's my JOB! I'm past my mid-50's and about two years ago became unable to sit atthe computer for a day's work due to herniated discs. I WAS aprofessional bookkeeper! Now, after 15 months of looking for a placethat would hire me, I work at Wal*Mart. And I was VERY good at my job.I've been on alternative work with my manager not really knowing whatto do with me, the doctor not having a clue and me wondering if I weregoing crazy. I expected a couple of days of no sound to clear this upand it hasn't! Just finished a round of steriods and it helped, atleast for now, but I still cannot bear to talk on the phone for morethan a couple of minutes at a time. Walkies at work drive me 'roundthe bend and some voices are quite painful. Last night was the firstin many that I could bear the sounds on the job (overhead speakers,tv's blaring, loud radios, and such) without ear plugs. I HAVE to workand WANT to work. Since I now understand the job (only been there just over threemonths)I have figured out some simple accomodations to allow me to dowhat needs to be done without damaging my back further. But I wasHIRED to answer phones. Another general practioner visit tomorrow. He said if the problemwasn't solved he'd try to get me an ENT referral. I printed thedefinition and symptomology from the website to show him. I'm so relieved I've been in tears! So many of you are suffering far more than I. But just knowing thatI'm not unconsciously malingering or going nuts is a huge help!I've also noticed that my concentration has suffered a bit and I havesome mild dizzy spells-more than before. I had many, many ear infections as a child but hearing has always beengood and I've not had problems as an adult. Never had any headinjuries, just neck and back. My hearing tests show some loss at highfrequency but that is minimal. So here I am and I'll be eagerly watching the posts. THanks forwelcoming me!
