Yes I think of it as brain damage too.......damage that has been

caused in utero (eg worst time for exposure to mercury and heavy

metals) so kids are born with ASD, or the insult (mercury, vaccines,

virus etc) occurs in early childhood when the body (which may be

genetically predisposed to being vulnerable eg poor detox systems)

is still developing and therefore not strong enough to stand the

onslaught - in which case kids are regressive type.

It is the insult that leads to the underconnectivity - it stops the

brain from growing the (nerve) connections........think of Boyd

Hayley's film of what mercury does to a nerve.

Great new piece of research came out in August: fMRI scans of

connectivity in theory of mind brain regions in ASD subjects

compared to non-ASD controls.

I think that soon (well - maybe within 10 years in scientific

terms!!) we will be able to measure to what extent a particular

intervention helps to re-develop the connections in different parts

of the brain.

There is a lot more research going on now into theory of mind, joint

attention and connectivity because of what fMRI scans can now

show :)
