Does Chrondromalacia Affect Performance?

It's clear that chrondromalacia is a fairly common condition in

athletes, and that many who have it are asymptomatic or at least do

not experience pain to an extent that it limits performance. However,

it occurs to me that any cartilaginous deterioration significant

enough to produce crepitation (which is quite common) may increase

friction in the patellofemoral joint, thereby reducing the release of

energy by the knee extensor mechanism. This may be more relevant to

some athletic endeavors than others.

Any insights?
