Reece will be 4 yrs old in March. He can say ball, dada, & mama but that is it. He just recently started babbling.

Judy

P.S. My best friend's husband didn't start talking until he was 4 years old (doesn't have a disability). He's a millionaire now :) Maybe the smart ones don't feel the need to talk...they are taking it all in until they are ready to say something!

Subject: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] when did your child start talking???To: "DSInfoEx" <DownSyndromeInfoExchange >Date: Sunday, November 30, 2008, 5:26 AMHello all

I vowed never to look at any developmental milestone charts anymore, but I did anyway and as expected, I'm left with the nagging question when the he** is going to start talking???

I had a look at DS authority Pueschels chart where it says that children with DS start talking in short sentences around 24 months on average, ranging from 18 to 46 months (children without DS: 21 on average/ranging from 14 to 32 months). (turning four next Thursday) is nowhere near that; he uses a few single words and some signs and that's just about it. Ok, so he might just be one of the very slow ones and a boy on top of it, but what perplexes me is the fact that of all kids with DS we have gotten to know during the last 4 years - which amounts to quite a big bunch - there is only ONE (a boy!) who started to speak 2-3 word sentences before he turned three which is why we call him the little profesor :-) So that makes me question the accuracy of Pueschels time frame.

How old was your child with DS when he or she started to talk?

I would debate the accuracy as well. Tyler is 8 and he can finally do short sentences and even long ones, but I don't know most of the words without some help.Of the 3 other children in his class with DS he is probably a little ahead of the other two, and very much ahead of another.

, My daughter who is 7.5 now would say one word (mom, eat, me, cat,

milk, juice, ... ) at around 4 but she would sign these same words starting

from about 3 years old without speaking them. She has slowly progressed with

her vocabulary until now she is starting to put together 4-5 word sentences.

She stopped doing signs when she was around 4 and only say the words she was

signing. She still understands signs as her ST using signs in the group

setting of her therapy with the other children but she exclusively uses

words to communicate.

Hi :

I'm a speech pathologist who primarily works with infants to 3 year

olds, however, I do have a few patients with Down syndrome, that range

in age from 3 to 9 years old. The majority of my caseload is

children with Down syndrome. In my experience, there is just so

much variability in how each child develops language. Just like

any child, everyone has areas of strength and weakness. I think that

sometimes children with Down syndrome have motor planning problems, and

while they want to get the sounds and words out, it is difficult for

them. The important thing is to keep plugging along, and stick

with those signs. Communication is the most important thing,

whether it is with sign language, verbal words or word

combinations. I had one little boy with Down syndrome who was

nonverbal until 3, however, he was extremely proficient and

communicative with signing. He's now 5 1/2 and completely verbal. He's

using many simple sentences, and his speech is very intelligible.

He doesn't use signs at all anymore.

Take care,

Ty had zero words at 16 months. When started him on the CM protocol and he is

now almost 18 months. He says ma-ma, da-da, bye, waves bye, blows kisses,

shakes head for no, gives high five, coughs on demand, imitates behavior and

sounds and the list goes on. I haven't even addressed the physical gains...wow!

Anyway, I have also notice A LOT of babbling where there had been none. It is

rhythmic and has conversational qualities. Ty has hearing issues that, until

recently, I thought were impinging upon his desire to make sounds. He has a

bone conduction hearing aide that he HATES and refuses to wear. I had been

signing to him and even forced imitation with no success. So, here we are.

Protocol, maturation, growth of dendritic structures...I don't know. What I do

know is his desire and ability to communicate has recently increased

logrithmically.

Good luck.

Yes, I know that. I have the Discovery DVD with Libby Kumin and Sue Buckley. But it is virtually impossible to find a speech therapist in Brazil who works with signing. They are just taught that way at University.PatKathy Ratkiewicz escreveu: At the workshop that I mentioned earlier, Dr. Libby Kumin said that in her experience, there is absolutely no evidence that using sign language slows language

development in people with Ds (that is the reason some parents don’t want to use it for their kids) Dr. Kumin says that sign is a very useful bridge to spoken language, and she highly recommends it. Can anyone tell me why posts sometimes turn out like this with long lines that

are partially covered up by the Yahoo column on the left?! It is aggrivating

because the only way to read the message is to go to our group and read it,

and even there the lines are really long!

This happens to me sometimes too. I just copy and paste the email into a
