Guest guest
Barb: (and given your previous inability to respond to any of my questions, I'll presume this is only really for others to absorb, not for you to actually reply) 1. You stated: " WHO actually set limits for residential levels of toxicants while the US government merely concentrated upon work environments and levels of releases from industry in communities (now undisclosed). " Response: a. It's easy to say what you want to when you are not paying for the " fix " you suggest or even your own research. b. If you used all of the WHO's premises, you'd have to get rid of employees for being irritating and several foods for their natural constituents. HUUUUM. Maybe that is a good idea. 2. You stated: " It makes no sense to determine at what point a normal, healthy adult male will become ill upon exposure to a pure substance under lab conditions. Reliance upon that same level of exposure when introducing toxicants into ambient environments, cannot be controlled for dosage actually received. You can control for the amount introduced to an environment but not its persistence, cumulative effects of the multiple routes of absorption (inhalation, ingestion, dermal absorption etc), combinatorial factors of multiple exposures occurring simultaneously, and the altered ability of the individual to continue tolerating the stress of exposure over time as toxicity effects diminish defenses and cause transient/permanent forms of damage. " Response: a. All risk assessments (that I know of) are now performed based on Exposure Assessments, not just dose-response calculations. This ranges from TMDLs to use of biocides in paints. Bioaccumulation is looked at. I recently looked at some data on bioaccumulation from a naturally extracted product (in food) that (in theory) accumulates in the ecosystem and the regulating body wanted to restrict it's use (despite the fact that is, has, and hopefully always will be naturally present in the environment without any real signs of accumulation). b. So Barb, how do you propose we estimate and manage risk from various agents (not that I actually expect a response; but it isn't really criticism if you only offer complaints, it's just grumbling negativism to soothe one's ego)?
