Guest guest
Thank heavens for small mercies R [infections] Dr. Simon Wessely no longer doing CFS work Hi, all.Since I know that many PWCs have rather strong feelings about Dr. Simon Wessely's impact on CFS over the past few years, I think you might like to know that when I sent him my recent papers, his response was to thank me, but also to tell me that he is "really not doing this work anymore." He wrote that he "got disillusioned with it all," and that he has "moved on." Just thought you'd like to know.Rich

Guest guest
Too bad Wessley didn't become "disillusioned" a long time ago...before he did so much damage to our communty. Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt, and consider that possbily it wasn't his intention to damage us...that he actually believed what he was saying...he still damaged us by focusing on the wrong thing and influencing so many people. Now that his research has accomplished nothing in the way of treatment after all these years, but accomplished a lot in the way of harm, he's giving up??? Nice. I hope other people who are so certain they're on the right track and find themselves in positions of influence take heed. I'm beginning to understand why researchers who keep a low profile may end up doing more good in the long run than those who are overly vocal. penny Windsor <rwindsor@...> wrote: Thank heavens for small mercies R [infections] Dr. Simon Wessely no longer doing CFS work Hi, all.Since I know that many PWCs have rather strong feelings about Dr. Simon Wessely's impact on CFS over the past few years, I think you might like to know that when I sent him my recent papers, his response was to thank me, but also to tell me that he is "really not doing this work anymore." Guest guest
Agreed, but to drive your point home even further, he claimed he was retiring 2 or 3 years ago, as I recall. Either he just can't resist dabbling, or he's just going through a pout at the moment, or he's actually devious enough that this is just a smokescreen. In this particular individual's case, all three are plausible. He certainly can play the elder statesman, influencing things quietly behind the scenes, while not being openly promoting his views. So I still regard him as a deadly threat. Besides, how many proteges has he sent forth into the world to carry on his ideas? How many people look to him as a role model? Regrettably, the survival of the "it's all in your head" school of thought does not depend on Wessely's being unretired, or alive. The intellectually lazy and self-centered, we shall always have among us. --Bob Nelly Pointis wrote: HE got disillusioned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The man really takes the cake of ALL cakes! Guest guest
Nelly, Strauss in the US did the same. He moved on to oversee alternative medicine at the NIH. I don't recall the actual study, but the last study by Wessely I read actually found evidence of active infection in cfs cases. He tried to explain it away, of course, because it didn't fit his theory. a > > HE got disillusioned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > > The man really takes the cake of ALL cakes! > > Shit on loads of people, leave them neck deep in the crap and then turn his nose up and says he's moving on, as if HE had been hard done by!!!!!
