He could possibly have actinomycosis, which is a hard to detect bacteria that slowly wormholes between jaw and sinuses. It definitely causes a lot of mucous production and often is accompanied by a salty taste around the teeth. Actinomyces looks like a yellow crystaline kind of substance under the microscope and until recently was thought to be a fungus. But like I said, many people miss it all together in their dx's, as it's very slow growing and the sample has to be handled quickly at a certain temperature or it will die. I think you're on the right track suspecting his teeth. Cracked teeth are open doors for infection of all types including fungi. And dead roots are ripe for necrosis (bone rot), which is often accompanied by chronic osteomyelitis (bone infection). Surgery and stuff at his age might be tough. A midway intervention would be to use a hydropulse and a

hydrofloss and irrigate both the sinuses and mouth with iodine/saline/xylitol mixtures to keep the bacterial or fungal production down. best of luck. penny ma ni <statonberg@...> wrote: Hello. New here. My father has had some unusual symptoms for years, which aregetting progressively worse. I thought I would run them by thisgroup, in search of some better leads. His main symptom is copious sinus drainage in the

back of histhroat coming from the upper right sinus. It gets worse in theevening or when he's more anxious. Outwardly it looks likehypersalivation, especially when he's speaking - which is oftendifficult without dripping. But even though the drainage/mucus isclear, he says it's thicker than saliva. He says the only thingthat reduces the symptoms is hard work like cutting wood andworking on the farm. He says there's no pain, but his whole rightsinus area feels different than his left, like there's somethingin there. Also he says it feels like the drainage has effectedhis throat area over time, making him less able to hock out thethick mucous. He is 76 years old. Otherwise very healthy for his age. Doesn'tsmoke or drink. Very active. Not the slightest bit overweight.Still has all his teeth. Is not on any medication and has nomajor health conditions other than spotty benign skin cancers. He has been to

several doctors and has had one sinus operationwithout success. He's had dentist x-rays and MRIs with nothingshowing up. I have searched a lot on the net but can't nail itdown. Some of what I found made me suspect a dental connection. He's got a couple teeth with dead roots, a couple cracked ones, lots of fillings, and a history of gum disease (once had anoperation). But he says it feels like it's coming from his uppersinus, not from any teeth. He's thinking about going to the MayoClinic, he's so frustrated.Do these symptoms ring a bell for anyone here? Any educatedguesses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Mark

Hey!! That's right down our alley. The scans showing negative for

problems/infection means absolutely nothing, they are viewed by

people that need seeing eye dogs. Most dental scenario's that your

describing leak infection into the bloodstream making it not so

pleasant. The fortunate thing about this whole story is the general

good health your describing- one slip up and WHAMO welcome to

autoimmune land...

When I read " working on the farm " I had the thought maybe he knows an

old country vet who could run a culture from the drainage...so you

can then find out what antibiotic works best...
