Guest guest
I am not exactly sure about how figures in with the scoring. Coach says she never mentioned 's DS and wouldn't. She doesn't like when other coaches tell the judges of any girl's disability- One coach was telling the judges about a girl's ADHD. does keep up and when you are watching she doesn't get so far off as to make everyone look bad- except for one competition... and the good thing, and what I think the judges looked at, was the other girls went around her and never missed a beat. :-) That's saying a lot if you are executing a back flip on cue!I have seen and been involved with a sped cheer squad and I was not impressed at all. They only meet once a week!!! How on earth are those kids gonna learn a routine with so little time input? The thing I love about our coach and squad is Kelley is a slave driver. :-) We had a 3 hour practice one Sat!! She let them play a total of 5 MINS. :-) Average was 6 hours per week, and they really needed it. It's so good for on so many different levels. I am going to sign her up at the gym now for a beginning tumbling class. She has conquered the seat drop on the tramp this season too! And that was just from playing around with the other girls on her own. It's such a joy to watch her do it with such ease now. She wants to try harder things..... One of the judges has a sped squad that just started a season, and she wants , but again, they just meet once a week. I just don't see how on earth they could be working on a challenging routine with so little time investment. I thought I might go and check them out just to see. The sped squads are not judged in the recreational league- they are 'exhibit' only squads, which I have conflicting feelings about. The sped squads who did perform, got great receptions from the crowds and the other squads. I will say last year it was very, very, VERY hard for - and me, cause I was doing it with her for the first half of the season- hand ( and leg) over hand, lots redirection etc. Kelley and I were both ready to quit, but was not and she LOVED going, even with all the frustrations she had. Then it was as though she broke through some wall- and it all started to gel for her. This year I barely had to help her, though I was there every practice. I can forsee me being able to leave her totally soon.To look for a recreational squad near you- start here : http://cheerleading.about.com/od/findasquad/Find_a_Cheerleading_Squad_All_Stars_School_College_Pro_and_More.htmAnother good place to start your search is any local gym that offers children's programs. Guest guest
That was the same kind of feeling I got from the sped teams too!! I got the feeling they were doing it just so the kids could get a taste of 'normal' but acted as though they couldn't 'really' do this- like it was pretend. No one had any pressure put them on them to perform or do it really right. No one was pushed at all, so no one really worked very hard. I thought it was sending the wrong message, so I didn't want her in there. I don't want her to ever think she shouldn't do her very best. This way she has some pressure to perform up the level of the typical girls and she has to work her little butt off! As I said, that is so good for her on so many different levels. Coach has a big soft spot for the toad. Every time she would see him across the room she had to run over and give him a hug. He tried to be tough on her and tell her to get back to the work, but he always had to stop to give her a hug first. ;-) It was a lot for me in watching all the dfferent relationships with her peers grow and develop over time. This has helped her in school because the girls have come to see her in a different light too. Since she has spent more time with them, some of the relationships have definately grown and changed. All those people ) inlcuding the high school girls who help coach) have a totally different view of DS now then they did before! That's a good thing because some day these kids will end up being employers, teachers, health and social care workers who will have a much more positive attitude towards people with DS because of being with them in class. girl scouts and cheerleading. What is that kind of acceptence worth?Maybe you could integrate the kids with special needs into the typical squads? Or get more typical kids to join them!At first I had to be the one making her work as no one else really knew if she could be pushed. But after they watched and learned how I work with her, they just took off and had the same expectations. Maybe that would work for you as well? Carol in ILMom to , 8 DS My problem is not how I look. This really has just been so great for her. :-) They also had a squad the competition who were mostly in wheelchairs! All but three, and they had obvious physical limitations too. They had a great routine worked out using all hands and one of the girls did a back flip- they got lots of audience involvement- the girls all started that, not the adults, and a standing ovation!! This year there was another little girl competing who had DS too. They didn't make it to the State level, but saw her briefly as they were leaving! They also have an entire special needs squad, but they don't 'compete' they are 'exhibition only' I never did see them do their routine, so don't know how they did. Carol in IL Mom to , 8 DS My problem is not how I look. It's how you see me.
