Guest guest
That is another thing….when Danny was just a couple of months old, he was in the hospital, and the nurse came in to give him his Reglan…in a 10 cc syringe. I asked her if they had a different kind there, because at home, he got 1 cc….and she assured me that it was right, and went ahead and gave it to him(and I, like a ditz, let her)…a couple of minutes later, she came in and said she had misread the order…the doc wrote 1.0 cc and she read it as 10 cc’s…she just blew it off..*I* called poison control from the hospital, because she was just so blasé about it. Danny was horribly crabby all day because of abdominal cramping from the medicine…I took care of him…the nurse just came in every couple of hours to check on him…then she had the nerve to tell me that she had told the charge nurse that the nurse taking care of him had to have a lighter assignment because he was ‘so much work’…(well….if you don’t overdose him, he is a pretty mellow kid, lady) Anyway…don’t be so hard on yourself…you are by no means the only person who ever did something like that….and plenty of times, it is far more serious than what you did KathyR From: DownSyndromeInfoExchange [mailto:DownSyndromeInfoExchange ] On Behalf Of Carol in IL Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2008 2:31 PM To: DownSyndromeInfoExchange Subject: Re: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Re: I GAVE THE WRONG CHILD SYNTHROID! If you want to be in the 'terrible mom' line, you'll need to get behind me :-) I have found the easiest things to OD people on are the meds they take every day. It becomes such a habit, you aren't even paying attention. I even OD's myself one day with allergy meds... meant to give one to , one to me, but duh.....I took both LOL I had a nice little buzz for awhile, let me tell ya. took 2 synthroids once- she did it herself after a trip where I had her meds in one of those M-S travel boxes. Another mom had accidentally given her child her higher dose of synthroid and had the presence of mind to remember that calcium blocks it's absorption, so gave him some, so I did the same and gave her Tums. It was not a big deal.. Once at the hospital the nurse came with oral prilosec that was clearly a LARGE dose. I questioned her, she pooh poohed me saying she does this all the time never makes mistakes blah blah blah... I persist ask her to please go double check, she leaves, comes back stating it was correct and I let her give it. Turns out she double dosed her. And SHE's a PROFESSIONAL! The worst overdosing I ever did though happened over the course of three DAYS! The Dr had given me an oral syringe with her Orapred ( really strong oral steroids). It was one of those freebie things Drs gets from the reps.... well I was sleep deprived cause she had been really sick and I filled the syringe like I had all the others I have used.. but on day three, in eyeballing the amount left over, it occured to me that there was not enough. After checking everything over, turns out that the syringe had 'dead' space and that you measured it differently so I had been over dosing her every single day on a very strong med. Panicked I called the Peds.... I have great peds who don't yell, but they were concerned, but there nothing we could do at that point. She had no short term problems, but who knows if I caused her long term issues with it. Feeling better about yourself now?? :-) Carol in IL Mom to , 8 DS My problem is not how I look. It's how you see me.
