Guest guest
My speech therapist told me NO sippy cup for .......straight to straw.....which he did really well with. She had me get a honey bear at Shop Rite and she picked up plastic tubing at Home Depot to fit the spout and made the perfect training straw cup.......filled it with drinkable yogart and when you push the tummy it goes up the straw......once he got a taste of it he has no problem sucking it down! We then transitioned to the Munchkin straw cup (after trying every kind out there) and this is what he uses for his juice. Hope this helps! Dawn, Mom to angel 2 My son is biting the nipple of his bottle and I have tried using sippy cups, but he gets very frustrated with it. I don't know if I am using a one on him too soon or if I should be using one at all. He hasn't started ot yet. So I am just wondering if there is a certian way to get him use to a sippy cup or wait until he starts ot. And if there are certian sippy cups out there that he might like. This is all new to me as he is only 1 and half yrs old and he is mentally 10 or 11 months old. Some suggestions and some advice would be greatly appreciated. A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Guest guest
Be sure that the tubing that you get is ‘food grade plastic’… (don’t use aquarium tubing, because that is not ‘food grade’ ) http://virtualweberbullet.com/plastics.html#foodgrade From: DownSyndromeInfoExchange [mailto:DownSyndromeInfoExchange ] On Behalf Of Dgaita1013@... Guest guest
I was going to say the same thing. Elise’s OT bought a bunch of the food grade tubing & we just cut it up for the bear cups. We used both the honey bear as well as one from Talk Tools available here http://www.talktools.net/s.nl/it.A/id.771/.f?sc=2 & category=722 Be sure that the tubing that you get is ‘food grade plastic’… (don’t use aquarium tubing, because that is not ‘food grade’ ) http://virtualweberbullet.com/plastics.html#foodgrade From: DownSyndromeInfoExchange [mailto:DownSyndromeInfoExchange ] On Behalf Of Dgaita1013@... Another one said that they're just a REALLY bad idea for some kids (like most kids with DS) because they reinforce poor motor habits. We went straight to a straw from a bottle with my daughter (hadn't heard of the honey-bear at that time): - I would dip the straw in milk, - put my finger on the end to hold the liquid in it, - put the other end in Theresa's mouth, - then let go to get the milk into her mouth. After doing this for quite a while, she eventually understood how to suck on a straw. You could probably have an OT or SLP demonstrate, if I'm not being clear. Personally, I'd go to the honey-bear cup first. Good luck, Debbie (NJ) p.s. Theresa, almost 8, STILL chews on her straws!
Guest guest
We used the bear cup too. Someone on this list gave a great explanation of how to get kids to start sucking. I kind of forget maybe someone will chime in. Some how you need to get the straw stuck to their tounge and they will start to suck to get it off. Sorry if that doesn't make sense. It worked for . he has no problems drinking out of any straws now (well maybe a little tounge protrusion sometimes:) Re: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] When should a sippy > cup be used and if> > at all> > > > > > My speech therapist told me NO sippy cup for > .......straight to> > straw.....which he did really well with.
