Right on, brotha man!

I always hear the economic left stating on the radio that health care

is one of those areas where there are strong arguments against a

free - or even relatively free - market. But they never really say

what the arguments are. I'm quite curious why this is supposed to be

(according to them) the case.

I have heard it emphasized that most people, getting insurance thru

their employer as they do, aren't really aware of what it costs or of

the fact that it inevitably comes from somewhere (ie their salaries

would be higher if their employers didn't have this expense to pay).

I guess not knowing what you're paying for a service is one thing

that should impair a market's efficiency (I know zero about econ, if

it's not obvious). This has been advanced as a reason why spending is

(arguably) out of control - and why spending in the USA particularly

is way out of proportion to the health benefits actually realized,

relative to comparable nations. The US spends 12-14% of GDP, or

something like that. And it's rising.

Now, like, ya know, Ron also wants to eliminate the NIH, which I

think is going way too far. The private sector is not incentivized to

cure our chronic diseases; it is incentivized to suppress the

symptoms thereof. Not that the drug industry is evil or something;

that's just the way it is. It's tremendously expensive to research

cures, and not tremendously remunerative. As for symptom-suppressing

treatments, well they wouldn't be so terrible, except that the record

shows they are usually not 100% effective - exerting their force, as

they usually do, a long way from the root of the condition.
