We have two therapists who job share a position in Orthopedics. It has worked

very well. When one is on vacation, we have ½ as many days to try to cover,

plus the other person usually is willing to help cover those. It did not work

well in Rehab where continuity seemed to carry much more significance. We have

kept job sharing in the acute and ortho areas. Staff like it because as we have

more therapists wishing to reduce hours because of family needs, they are able

to meet both obligations more satisfactorily.>>> 04/05 6:45

I am a rehab manager in a 100 bed hospital-4 PTs, 2 CPTAs, one ATC, two OTs, two

STs. I have recently approached the administration of my hospital about

job-sharing in our department. Has anyone out there had any experience, either

themselves or in supervising employees who share job duties/hours? I would like

some real life examples to discuss with the administrators who have already

decided it would not work without really investigating it. Any help I can get

would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

,

About 3 years ago we had two therapists share a full time position. These two

ladies did an excellent job of communicating with each other via notes left at

work and phone calls at home. One always worked M & T and the other

always worked Th & F. They alternated W. Our department meetings were on

Th and so the person who worked M/T would frequently come in for those. If

one wanted to go on vacation the other ususally filled in. It worked great for

them as they had flexible schedules on their days off. (i.e.- no small

children,

another job, other commitments).

Hope this helps.
