Perhaps she should try putting on a piece of relaxing music prior to starting the feed, do deep breathing exercises to relax herself and then try nursing. If she can make herself as calm as possible and tell herself that it does not matter if the baby does not take the milk, things should get better. Wishing her a wise decision. nne > She eats for about 30 minutes in the morning, but it > goes downhill from there the rest of the day and she gets fussy and > doesn't want to nurse. >
Guest guest
What about a breast pump so she can just pump her milk? ----- Original Message ----- From: beckymauldin2001 Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 12:50 PM Subject: baby formula question- need help!! I hate to sound so urgent, but my sister is about ready to put her baby on soy formula because of the trouble she's having. The baby is 6 1/2 months old and has been feeding great up until now, but after she's started getting some solid foods, she doesn't want to nurse much anymore. She eats for about 30 minutes in the morning, but it goes downhill from there the rest of the day and she gets fussy and doesn't want to nurse. My sister's main concern with the baby formula in NT (milk based) is that it is so expensive (like $180 a month as opposed to soy for $70 a month). Would it still be a nourishing formula if certain things were left out, like the lactose, or the oils, or cream?? In other words, what can she get by with? I figure that anything she does besides soy formula is good. She has access to fresh raw cow's milk... Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated!! Guest guest
That may work...I'll ask her. I'm concerned that her nutrition hasn't been adequate and her milk quality is too low....She has eaten the typical SAD most of her life and has only recently improved it. Her only supplements are some cod liver oil and a multivitamin the doctor gave her... --- In @y..., " Dana Milmeister " <danamilmeister@y...> wrote: > What about a breast pump so she can just pump her milk? > ----- Original Message ----- > From: beckymauldin2001 > @y... > Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 12:50 PM > Subject: baby formula question- need help!! > > > I hate to sound so urgent, but my sister is about ready to put her > baby on soy formula because of the trouble she's having. Guest guest
possibly you could give her a copy of the Wise Traditions quarterly journal - for Fall 2001. in it are two relevant articles, one on breastfeeding, the other on formulas. giving her this will help her to make an informed decision. also, in the article is a recipe for fortified commercial formula - although i don't think it was intended for regular use, it might be better than soy. i think it was a milk-based formula with egg yolk and cod liver oil added to it. also, i wonder, why does your sister want soy instead of a milk based formula. just curious. ----- Original Message ----- From: " beckymauldin2001 " <beckymauldin@...> < > Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 3:50 PM Subject: baby formula question- need help!! Guest guest
Hi Becky, If I were your sister, I'd pull back on the solid foods. Breast milk is more important than solids at this point in the baby's life. Also, the stress reducing ideas for the mom which someone else suggested are good, as are herbs such as Blessed Thistle which will increase milk supply. If that baby gets hungry, she will nurse, never fear.... good luck, Margie --- In @y..., " beckymauldin2001 " <beckymauldin@h...> wrote: > I hate to sound so urgent, but my sister is about ready to put her > baby on soy formula because of the trouble she's having. Guest guest
Many thanks to everyone who responded and particularly to Dana for spending the time to help my sister work through this. Your advice was very well received and she is feeling much better about the situation. You folks are great! Guest guest
Dear Becky, At 6 1/2 months, she might be able to go with diluted raw milk plus lactose (this is very important) plus other whole foods (egg yolk, vegetables with butter, banana, etc) plus cod liver oil supplement. But ANYTHING is better than soy. Sally
