Guest guest
Our immune systems are weakened. Our bodies are working hard to fight the hcv, leaving us more susceptible to other problems. I was advised to have a flu shot while on the treatment, implying that it was more important for me than for the average person without hcv. -dz-Norma <netaylor@...> wrote: No, not that I know of. Guest guest
Hi Carla, I just joined this support group today to find out if anyone has had serious infections while taking Enbrel. I ran across your post about your staph infection. How are you doing? I have been sick since my last injection the last week in June. I am so scared. I have been on Enbrel for approximately seven years. I am always warned about infection, and never take a shot when I am already sick. I have taken three rounds of antibiotics and am on prednisone. I will see my rheumatologist next Tuesday and hope he has some way of helping me. I have been out of state all summer, though I did see a doctor in Missouri. I would sure be interested in knowing how your infection has turned out. Thanks P.S. I hope I can figure out how to read your reply!

Guest guest
SSN and Group SSn, Sorry I don't know your name. YOu forgot to put a name on the end. I read your story and think how sad life to do this to you. I dreamed of being a nurse. Illness puts you at home watching tv.. Even in our old age we plan to have fun. I have a lot of skin problems too. No sores on my face. My feet are so dry and crackly if feels like cardboard. I am sure its from the RA. It's heart breaking when you hear someone so important to helping others can't get out to do what they do best because of lousy diseases. A lot of people here are so wonderful. Dodge is another I love so much. I know if we can walk on the moon we can figure how to get red of all these disabling diseases. I hope they can find a cocktail to help you to get back on your feet again. The group here is so understanding. If you feel like venting or talking about it just knock your self out. I am really into our group. I read everyones post and love to hear someone has found the meds to put them back on track with life. When you feel better write us about it too. It make's us so happy, besides everone that can be help is hope for us too. gentle hugs everyone Clora > I am taking Remcade for about 1 month.I seem to be getting different > sores.I have a nasty one on my foot, and 2 on my face(so attractive)I > want to go back to work so badly.I worked in the operating room as a > scrub nurse for many years-after getting RA,I was catching every > infection that came into the OR.All I do is sit around all day and > watch old movies and read books .-and of course take pills!Anyone out > there that wants to talk to a sick and tired of being sick and tired > ole lady? >

Guest guest
Hi SSN! Hooo boy! I can relate...! I was a nurse once upon a time, too. I was a charge nurse in a care facility. Those days are over... I have been out of it for a long time, raising children. I want to go back, but the RA... some days are good... I think " I can go back! " I make plans to take the test to get back into it... then I am down with the pain, the fatigue. Some days I have spent in bed. I don't think I can get back into that profession again! And I was teaching children until just recently... but I was catching things, too. Last winter I spent at least 2 months straight sick with upper-resp. infections and strep, caught from the children I taught. I can't do that anymore. I have children still at home and I have to be careful who I allow them to " play " or " hang out " with for fear of getting sick. Yep, sick and tired of being sick and tired! I understand!!!! So maybe those of us, like you and I, who spend some time reading books and watching old movies can compare notes on the old movies and books we are reading.....PRIDE AND PREJUDICE!!!!! What are you reading?! I'm sorry you have been suffering from infections, though. Are they getting any better? Will you be going back to work in the OR eventually? Or will you change your specialty? When I was going through all the infections myself, I asked my pharmicist about building my immune system with " Emergen-C " packets. At first she commented they would work, then we both realized I should not use those. It's a battle, isn't it? Please let us know how you are doing, how you are feeling.... I hope you get feeling better! ....Old movies, eh? Have you watched Jimmy s " Harvey " lately?! If you have to sit there with infections, getting better so you can go back to work.... Harvey can give you enough chuckles to help you fight any infection!!! Good luck.... I'm pulling for you! >From: " ssn_cnnrs " <ssn_cnnrs@...> >Reply- > >Subject: [ ] infections >Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2008 05:29:17 -0000 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >X-Originating-IP: 69.147.64.127 >X-Sender: ssn_cnnrs@... >Received: from n50b.bullet.mail.sp1. Guest guest
Hi sherry, I stopped the Enbrel because of infections in my mouth. I had to take four tooth because of infections that could not be stooped with huge amount of antibiotics. So: I got read of four tooth and of Enbrel (to cut the process of damage). Last time I felt normal was 27 years ago, when all he long journey of the severe PA started. Guest guest
Hi Sherry, Seems like a normal thing to do, treat the symptom that is strongest and right there in your face, but, that is not the ONLY thing we have to worry about. If the disease itself is ignored, the pain will only continue to travel and the damage will be forever. I don't like being sick or in pain any more than the next guy. Lord, what I wouldn't give to have the energy and the ability I had only 7 or 8 years ago. It seems like I wasted an awful lot of it now that I look back on it. The MTX is not a pleasant drug, but neither is the disease when left alone. I am lucky in as much as the only disfiguring I have is the little finger on my left hand and have lost some movement in my right wrist. I don't usually quit taking the MTX altogether. I've only been told to one time by my rheumy. I had to move up to a stronger pain med last winter because Vicodin just wasn't doing the job anymore. My doctor sent me a script for norco ( still a form of Vicodin ) and I only need to take a half of one and not very often. If this is remission, I'll take it. Now, if the fibro, thyroid, high blood pressure and allergies would go into remission, too, LOL. Just remember, dear, we wouldn't need to lower our resistance if it were not for the fact that our immune system is running in 5th gear and attacking our bodies just like a battering ram into a cement wall. This seems to be the only way to stop the progression at this time. Pray for a MIRACLE CURE. This is our best hope. God bless you cameronparkmom@... Guest guest
Sherry, The real problem is your bodies immune system is attacking you body. Guest guest
Hey thanks for the comments. Yeah, I know we have to take stuff. I have some damage in one toe and my fingers. I also have problems with my elbows and hip. I will start back on the medications when the Dr. gives me the go ahead. Right now I am struggling to get through the night without coughing my head off. And, it is kinda like life..... " if it isn't one thing....it is another " . Life is good though, in spite of the pain and headaches. I guess that is why we keep on keeping on. I cannot understand why people are intelligent enough to put a man on the moon and do countless other seemingly impossible feats but the medical profession cannot come up with an answer to our pain. I don't like taking pain medicine but sometimes it is like getting blood out of a turnip. I think if we had doctors who have as much pain as we do they would be a little more understanding. I don't know why they are so concerned about us becoming dependent on pain medication. We have to work and function and sometimes when the pain is so bad, it is extremely difficult. I simply have to work if I can push myself. I rely on over the county meds when I am not in severe pain but then when I ask for something else, it is: " oh, I don't prescribe anything stronger than Darvocet " . Yeah, and when the pain is bad it is like spitting on a forrest fire. I suppose they are saving the strong " stuff " for our 'last' days. That way we don't become dependent. My family doctor has known me for years and knows that I don't abuse medications, but my rheumy (is that how everyone refers to them?) does NOT know me and therefore assumes that I am gonna be a druggy. I cannot over medicate myself. My work requires that I be very alert and when I am home I usually have my grand kids. I just don't understand their reluctance to help us with our severe pain. DO YOU? Guest guest
If you just treat the pain, you end up with destroyed joints! No thanks. I want to treat the actual disease and stop or prevent the joint damage. I wonder whether you might try a different med, like Humira. Or ask about stretching out the time between doses so your immune systems doesn't stop completely. " S. Zorzi " <szorzi_1999@...>
Guest guest
Sherry: I've been on Enbrel for 18 months with nary a sniffle. But last week, I went in to see the doctor with chest congestion and coughing that was diagnosed as bronchitis. My doc put me on an anti-biotic to prevent any side infections, I guess, since bronchitis is typically a virus; but she told me no Enbrel until the anti-biotic was over. I didn't get much better, however, despite using Mucinex and all the typical over the counter stuff you take for chest congestion.  So, yesterday she had me get a chest x-ray and blood tests to rule out pneumonia.  Now that she knows for sure that I don't have that, she's putting me on prednisone for 3-4 days because I have a touch of asthma and it works well for that - and will also help any PsA pain, though so far, so good. There's been none. (A zillion years ago - way before PsA - I got bronchitis and before I even knew what was happening it went into acute asthma and I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Not being able to breathe is the scariest thing you will ever encounter, believe me!!! But asthma has not been much of a problem at all, since I went thru some years of allergy shots.)  When I asked about going back on Enbrel when I stop the anti-biotic tomorrow, she said no - that it would just complicate any further diagnosis and treatment and until I was much better, she wanted me to stay off it. She has had a patient on Enbrel who suffered a life threatening infection and was hospitalized, taken off Enbrel immediately. She ultimately got better and chose to go back on Enbrel when all threat of the infection was gone, despite the scare.  It's my understanding from everything I hear and read that if you have an infection or are undergoing a procedure that can lead to one, you stay away from immunosuppressants.   Joanna Hoelscher ________________________________ From: ssherryhh46 <ssherryhh46@...> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 7:14:39 PM Subject: [ ] infections I have a chest cold and ear ache, I did not give my Enbrel injection over the weekend due to that. Guest guest
Sherry, I have not stopped my Humira for mild colds but I did delay my injection last week after a cold got better then started to get worse again. The cold cleared up in short order, but my joints started aching after only a 4 day delay in my shot. I took it 4 days ago and I'm still hurting. The weakness in your legs concerns me. I think you should definitely speak to your rheumy about that ASAP. Enbrel can cause MS-like symptoms which is not a good thing. That should go away once you stop the drug, but it is reason to be concerned. You should talk to the doctor right away. There are other meds you can try instead, if necessary. best regards, sherry z
Guest guest
Randy, be sure to let your doctor know about the weakness in your legs. I would it report it to his nurse by phone and not wait until my next appointment. MS-like symptoms can be (rarely) a side effect of Enbrel, which go away if the drug is stopped promptly but may become permanent if it is ignored for too long. " S. Guest guest
Sherry:  I had the same symptoms as you - bronchitis causing a lot of coughing, especially in the evenings (though not usually after I went to sleep.) My doctor had told me to call her if I was not better; I did a week to the day that she saw me and put me on an antibiotic and told me to use Mucinex. When I told her I wasn't much better, she ordered a chest x-ray and blood tests to rule out pneumonia; and as soon as they came back negative, she put me on a short term dose of prednisone to clear up the lungs so I would not go into a full blown asthma attack, which is not typically a problem for me but I'd been having some wheezing. She'd already told me I should not be on Enbrel while taking an anti-biotic but since that was almost finished, I asked her about going back on it. She told me that would just complicate any further need for diagnosis and/or treatment and that if I was having any pain (which I'm not) the prednisone would help.  I started on the prednisone last night and am to call her on Monday - or see her if I'm not significantly better. Even if I am, she said that we would decide what to " do next " at that time. (I have not taken prednisone in decades and have never needed it for PA.) It has been my internist handling this - not my rheumy. But my internist is very knowledgeable and has other patients on Enbrel - and has been through a life-threatening infection with one (successfully treated.) I trust her a lot. Anyway, this is a long tale but the point is maybe you could see if prednisone is a short-term option for you (both for the chest congestion and your PA pain) until you can go back on Enbrel.    Joanna Hoelscher

Guest guest
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any problems with Enbrel and others causing their immune system to stop fighting against certain diseases. Like it says in the side effects. Has it happened to anyone here? What are the good results of Enbrel, methotrexate and Humira?
