Guest guest
My son's tics have been really bad lately, lots of eye blinking and squinting down hard. Do any of you have experience w/ this? He is on a low dose of Clonidine (old school & mild, blood pressure med that's shown to help children w/ tics and overactivity/stimulation) to help w/ them and I can increase it at any time. I'm just hoping one of you may have some advice prior to my increasing his meds. His tics interfere w/ his playing and daily life, he has previously told me that he wished he could stop : ( He's only six years old. Guest guest
If he's on any other meds besides the clonidine, ask his doctor about possible side effects. I have no experience with this but I know that some meds (particularly antipsychotics) may cause wha tlooks like tics. Also how are the doctors so sure he doesn't have Tourette's? Is it just that he doesn't have severe enough symptoms or is there an actual medical reason to rule out the TS? (I've read sometimes about something like " chronic motor or vocal tic disorder " which is lke Tourette's but they don't meet enough criteria - sort of like PDD as compared to autism, I would imagine.) Guest guest
My son developed Tourettes-like tics( strange mouth movements, winking one eye, and forceful tossing of his head back and forth as well as some arm and leg movements) after being on Risperdal for a short time in Jan. 2007. His DAN doctor suggested 500 mg GABA 3x day, 1000mg taurine 2x day, 250 mg tyrosine 2x day for Right frontal lobe dysfunction, to decrease impulsivity. He may want to test for PANDAS in the furture...but the supplements seem to be helping decrease his tics after just one week. My son is 17 1/2 and weighs 125#. Guest guest
His first pediatric neurologist was at Children's Hospital in Vanderbilt, and Dr. Pina Jesus- Garza said that there are several 'diagnoses' that can coexist with autism yet aren't given the 'actual diagnosis' of that, follow me? Like Zac's impulsitivity, hyperness, fixations, tics....all of those can be part of Autism (PDD NOS, for us) but the child not necessarily have the laundry list of diagnoses to follow them: OCD, ADHD, Tourettes, etc. However, the symptoms are still treated. This neurologist deals more with autism than our current ped. neurologist, which usually sees epilepsy. I'm sure that the dx's are still given, and I'm not one to be adversarial at all with it, but in our case this was how it was explained. Clonidine is the only med he's taking, the tics were present prior to it and we thought it was helping. However, after reading about 'vocal tics' and learning that the 'nose movements' he's made all summer are actually a 'vocal tic' (I never would've associated this) we realize that it hasn't helped like we thought. We can always increase the dose, we didn't because we thought it had helped his tics (the blinking, the grunts). I was just, and still am, holding out hopes that some of you guys have some wisdom to share! Currently, he seems better. He had a fever that came around the time I posted the original question. The fever was treated (went to his doc., no other symptoms were present) and then it went into a stomach virus over the weekend. I believe his system reacts to upcoming viruses, we've had these warnings before...just as we watch for other signs for being upset, etc. Anyhow, thanks for the postings! Guest guest
My son develops different tics on and off. For example he started shrugging his shoulders alot and we found out it was the sensation of his hair on the back of his neck. Have you asked your son how it feels when he does this? Does it make him feel better? Could wearing sun glasses help? Sometimes its outside things. Squinting b/c he's got sweat in the eyes. Its hard when they are younger. As G gets older I am able to better communicate with him. Let us know how it goes, Bonnie sensoryfun.com
