Guest guest
My son does read and actually a good reader, but he does not understand concepts, cause and effect so reading something like the constitution would be way to overwelming and he would not get anything out of it. I gave it a try and after the first paragraph he got upset and said homework all finished. Do not get me wrong I am glad that they are trying to do more but for him I know its going to be a hard challenge with alot of meltdowns. I had him at this one school that all he did was color and stuff as if he was in preschool. I called a meeting and said what is he actually learning? He has been doing this for 3 years, I think he mastered it. So I told them I wanted him to be challenged. After a long fight, almost at the end of the year they did. He changed schools after that. Luckily I found a great school that he was in last year that really challenged him. We live in Illinois. But maybe I can try to make it fun for him and read alittle each time. Maybe I will try to animate it. I may have to use his sister to help maybe act it out some how. So you are right. Its better that they are trying to make him excel rather than not challenging him. I wonder if you have anything at home that he does, maybe art, or work that he likes to do? Or maybe have him do some work so they can see.I had to bring examples from home to show the school what he was doing so that they could see that he was able. I am now seeing with your email that maybe what they gave me for him was not such a negative, when I look back and see that I was where you are. I hope that my email helps you in some way. Guest guest
Rhonda, I live in orland park illinois. I can see my son saying the same thing about homework all finished. They just dont have the attention span after such a challenging day at school. I just wish they would challenge my son more. He has been doing the same stuff since he was three and now he is seven. Enough already is what I say. He is capable. It is a shame I have to spend more money with testing to prove it . I feel school should be teaching him. in A regular classroom I wouldnt have to prove his capablity. They just dont know how to teach a child that is nonverbal. Did you see my previous post? Would you continue to send your son on the bus? Thanks for helping me. Guest guest
Hi,educational needs of children on the spectrum are such a challenge. My children get so much homework I keep asking what do they do all day. All that homework really amounts to giving me homework. How is sitting in the classroom helping them learn if they are given alternate assignments, like coloring. A teacher took a test from my son before he was finished. He fought the teacher because he wanted to finish the test. I was told ALL children are given extra time for tests as a rule for our school. All they need to do is ask...my son does not have the verbal skills or reasoning to ask. He hit the teacher for ripping the test out of his hand. My thought was the teacher could have offered more time. This approach wasnt fair to the mainstream class. Its those battles that wear you out. I have also been told my son chooses not to do his work. I really have trouble with that statement. If he doesnt know how to do the assignment of course he will not do it. Is he really choosing not to? I think not. Our kids need the help comfort and kindness of preschool with the exploration of learning styles that click for them with an advancing approach to education needs. Mainstream classrooms are not based in this manner as children mature. Its a classroom ideal not a reality yet. I share your concerns about our childrens educational needs. Guest guest
When my son Bronson was in Elementary school I always wondered WHY they'd give such young children SO much homework?? It was CRAZY!! He was SO slow due to his Autism/developmental delay problems that he could NEVER get finished in time to play at all...and that was when I would help him. He barely had time to take a bath and get in bed on time!! DON'T DO what I did either...I got so frustrated with the teachers piling the work on him, that I started doing a LOT of his work for him...Then I came to my senses and realized that Bronson was NOT learning ANYTHING, and doing it for him just to keep him OUT OF TROUBLE (can you believe that??) was NOT fair to HIM. So I demanded an IEP and then I took everyone that could help me to the IEP and we sat down and told those teachers what was going on... Believe it or not, they wanted me to load him up on MORE DRUGS to help his ADD... All drugs did for Bronson was ZONE HIM OUT MORE.. Anyway, I have lost a LOT of faith in the medical and educational fields when it comes to helping kids with any handicaps, etc. It amazes me how quick doctors are to write out a script these days... In my town, which isn't teeny tiny but still NOT large by any means (pop.around 37,449), there are NO resources for Autistic kids. I'd have to travel to Birmingham, Alabama (about 3 hour drive) to find adequate help. So I'm stuck with what is available here in Florence...which is sorely LACKING... I sincerely hope you can find help in your area, whether it be educational, medical, or whatever. Many blessings, :-) DIANE > > > > > > From: kathytrilla <kathytrilla@ ...> > > > Subject: 2 nd grade work > > > To: AutismBehaviorProbl emsyahoogroups (DOT) com > > > Date: Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 9:03 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi its me again!! Guest guest
My daughter is mainstreamed in science and social studies. But in her IEP it is stated that in these two classes she is graded as pass/fail not with an actual grade and that her work is to be modified, that includes test. Her spec. ed teacher is given her test about four days in advance then that teacher (and me, sometimes) modifies the test. She is only given half as many questions as the other children and it is only the questions with the main concepts not hypothetical questions. When we study at home I modify the answers so they are short and simple and then I make everything into flashcards. Then I send the flashcards to school so when she studies she is studying the same answers. EVERYTHING can be modified!! > > > > > > > > From: kathytrilla <kathytrilla@ ...> > > > > Subject: 2 nd grade work > > > > To: AutismBehaviorProbl emsyahoogroups (DOT) com > > > > Date: Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 9:03 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi its me again!! Guest guest
Yes, my son is NOW getting the help he needs in school, now that he's in High School. But in Elementary school he wasn't, even though I kept telling the teachers and the Principal (who also tried to EXPEL him a few times) that he was Autistic. She(Principal) acted like she didn't believe me, and wanted to know what his diagnosis was and how to get in touch with his doctor, etc... All she (Principal) wanted to do was paddle Bronson even though I clearly stated NOT to paddle on his enrollment card every year. I had more arguments with that crazy lady than I care to remember... :-( DIANE > > > > > > > > > > From: kathytrilla <kathytrilla@ ...> > > > > > Subject: 2 nd grade work > > > > > To: AutismBehaviorProbl emsyahoogroups (DOT) com > > > > > Date: Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 9:03 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi its me again!!
