Could someone clarify the " 21-day PT practice without referral " in the State

of Florida. I was told by the Board of Prof Regulation that this applies only

to patients not previously assessed. The law is a little difficult to

interpret in terms of what actually is allowable and legal, and what exactly

does the law prohibit. Any response appreciated. Thanks

Hi Boca Irish (Boca Raton, no doubt), I used to practice in the Palm Beach

County area and still have my practice act from FL. My understanding of 21

day practice of PT without referral: Although you may see a patient

without referral for up to 21 days (one catch: for a condition " not

previously assessed by a practitioner of record " ) for any problem that is

safely considered to be within the scope of PT, you still, in most cases,

will have difficulty with reimbursement forthcoming from insurers..(this

doesn't apply to WC patients, medicare, and most managed arrangements, so

the market is really quite small now) The intent, I beleive, by the PAC of

the FPTA was to open a new market of direct access to physical therapy, but

because of reimbursement requirements and changes..this has fallen short.

I hope this helps. If you need more info, please feel free to email me at
