Guest guest
In some ways, my college years were the most challenging of all in terms of coping with my 4s (and I'm 39, so that was some time ago). I was absolutely phobic about gum-chewing. In addition, my roommate had asthma and made constantly made my #1 least favorite sound of all - that one where a person sort of honks their nose and sends all the phlegm to their throats . . . .aaaagh! It was tough. I had a fan on my side of the room, wore earplugs at night, used earplugs when I studied (and brought them to exams in case the person next to me was chewing). On the other hand, I survived it. I actually liked my phlegm sucking roommate and lived with her for a few years! I sometimes chewed gum myself to drown out the sounds of others chewing. My 4s still causes me a great deal of distress, but I muddle through, and I try not to let it get in the way of my relationships and my life. I know that I'm not crazy, but it is still MY problem to deal with, and no one who doesn't suffer from it will ever truly understand, so . . . I just try to deal. I think that college was helpful in teaching me that I could survive any challenge to my 4s. Just another way to think about it .. . . good luck to you!
