Guest guest
We have used the saline sprays successfully for years with my 6 year old son who has Down Syndrome. He has very small nasal passages that are easily congested. He is very compliant, because he knows it helps him breathe better! At our last visit to the ped ENT, we asked about the Neti Pot method, and the docs at University of Michigan endorsed it. She felt Ethan was old enough to try it after he recovered from having his tonsils and adenoids out (soon!) I bought it, tried it, LOVED it, and have been using it daily. I live in Michigan where the winters are very dry, and sinus issues are part of life in the winters here. I have been problem-free so far this winter!! I just bought one for my mother-in-law. I really recommend it! ANother thing that may help is called a Neti Pot. It is a small pot used to flush out the sinus cavities. You put warm salt water in the pot, then put the spout in one nostril. Lean forward a bit, and pour the water into that side, allowing the water to flow up into your upper sinuses, and come out the other nostril. do the other side as well then blow your nose. It is supposed to really clean your passages out, while moisturizing them as well. It is said that it really helps allergies and the cold congestion you get. I'm thinking seriously about trying one, as i have horrific allergies and am on an atihistmine daily for it! It seems like there> > > have been a lot of postings about colds/flus lately. Guest guest
Oh, that kind of thing works wonders. Though it does tickle! I have a nasal irrigator (a machine like a water pik for the nose) that I started using when I was pregnant -- because I used to get tons of pregnancy congestion -- and it was a miracle. And it is a huge help with colds, especially if you're sneezing a lot, because it can wash out the stuff that's making you sneeze. Haven't used it in ages, though, since apparently I don't get sick anymore (watch, now I'll probably wake up sniffling and sneezing tomorrow...).
