Guest guest
woke up in a bit of trouble this morning. Her appetite and thirst were low yesterday and she hadn’t used many diapers. She woke this morning at 5:30am crying but I let her cry herself back to sleep (not an uncommon thing). I then went to get her at 7am and she would not wake up. She was breathing and was trying to open her eyes but her body was limp. She was lying flat on her back with her arms above her. I called emergency and was trying to wake her as I spoke with the nurse. They told me to take her temperature rectally so I did and it was 93 degrees. We rushed to the ER and they did a battery of tests and even took some spinal fluid since we’ve had an outbreak of meningitis. All came back negative/normal except for a low blood sugar. She was at 40 and normal is 60 – 120. They injected her with some sugar water but she still didn’t respond. She was opening her eyes occasionally so she wasn’t totally gone and her vital signs were in a normal range. So, my question is WHAT HAPPENED? Something gave her a low appetite then maybe causing a state of hypoglycemic shock in the wee hours of the morning. She did wake up crying at 5:30am (which was probably a call for some food). My first thought, of course, was that she had a seizure. has been without signs of seizures and she’s almost 3 years old. I know she is at high risk because of the PMG. But, the doctor doesn’t seem to think she had a seizure. She said she couldn’t rule it out but that it was more likely a low blood sugar induced state. ??????….. Our doctor said she had seen more than her share of “normal” kids come in the ER in the morning with these symptoms. She said it was usually when parents were out, the kids were with a sitter who played with them but may not have fed them well enough, they stayed up late, sleeps in and everyone misses there usual breakfast. The child goes into a low blood sugar shock and is too listless to take in fluids or eat so an ER visit is needed. I’m hoping that’s all it is but I’m not so sure. What made her hypoglycemic in the first place? We weren’t having that much fun last night We’re home now and she’s still sleeping. I was able to get 4 oz. of milk down her but I just don’t feel I’m out of the woods yet. Anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences? FYI - It’s 1:30pm here in California on Tuesday the 15th.
