Guest guest
Hi - first and foremost, I do not profess to be a Scientist, nor a Doctor, merely someone afflicted by this wretched condition pondering over some things. I've long held a theory that naturally forming Opiates could be one of the factors (amongst others) responsible for this syndrome. Anyone looked into this too? ie Opiates formed from Gluten/Casein digestion. Read some scientific research that showed that if Opiate levels in the brain were temporarily blocked then the human subjects would continually flinch whilst looking at 2 shapes, one of which would create a small electric shock a second or so after being displayed (I may be slightly inaccurate, this is from memory). People given a placebo of saline adjusted to the small shock and didn't show any problems in tuning out the stimulus. Course that contradicts the theory of too much causing 4S, but disruption in the equilibrium could well have been the problem there. /Worth mentioning in my case is as a child I had Pica (wanting to eat items not normally eaten) as well as having a Fight or Flight system that basically didn't work properly and was locked on Flight. Nowadays I do crave dried pasta and milk - constantly consuming one or the other... neither here now there that bit perhaps, but may be something. Guest guest
I did not mean "throw out" I meant to put it out there To: soundsensitivity From: pialevensteins@...Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2008 09:13:20 -0400Subject: RE: Opiates and their potential role in 4S It is good to throw out all ideas and findings we each have for our own research!! Guest guest
, I know a little about gluten/casein and other food sensitivities, especially related to autism. There are many accounts of autistic children overcoming at least some of their symptoms when put on a gluten and casein free diet. I know 4s isn't the same as autism, but sensitivity to sound is a common autistic feature. I've read that intense cravings for a particular food can signal an intolerance to that food--it seems contradictory but it has to do with the opiates formed by the digestion of that food. The opiates go to your brain, your brain form new receptors, you crave that food even more the next time--it's classic physical addiction. Gluten and casein are common offenders, but other foods can be a problem for different people. Among my circle of friends, this stuff is pretty well understood and accepted, and I know a few moms who have their children on special diets that work extremely well for various conditions. However, most mainstream doctors would dismiss it as unscientific and unproven. It wouldn't hurt to try a gluten/casein free diet for a while--there's tons of info on the internet about it. It's hard, especially at first, but once you're on it for a while (and if it's the problem), you'll stop craving wheat and dairy so much. I have no idea if it will help your 4s, but it would be awesome if it did! Keep us posted,
