Guest guest
Fortunately, the regimen I found worked and it worked pretty quickly and a small amount of flax was involved. The whole combo worked beautifully and it was about 3 weeks before I could taper down. My plan was pretty specific to my child and may not work for others just as other's suggestions didn't work for us.I will say that the natural supplement industry is very disliked (understatement) by the mainstream medical establishment and I take their studies with a grain of salt. I will not argue that if someone has blood or other specific health issues the oils may be significantly detrimental but I do question the huge risk implied. I don't trust the FDA or AARP on it's face. That's just me.Also, we had very positive experiences with fish oil and excema so who knows?I listed what we did on another post.I do appreciate the information and I will look into it further and am curious to see what the details of the study are. Studies are often conducted with a particular angle- the details are very important.Yes I know that cod liver oil is not the same. I found this while fishing for this information for the list member who asked for it.Thought I'd post it since it was interesting to read.Point is that these oils should not be used for children with chronic constipation. The one article stated this. In addition it is not for long term use. Your body gets robbed of Vitamin E and so that is why they add vitamin E in it. Also children build up vitamin A and D which is what these oils have so it can become toxic for children.People with mental disorders, diabetics, folks taking heart medicines should never take these medicines without a doctors approval. The Mayo advises that kids under 18 should not be given these supplements unless a pediatrician approves firsthand. And most parents give kids vitamin supplements so giving these oil supplements on top of that would give the child toxic doses of Vitamins A, E and D.Many people like my father after 1 weeks use of a low dose had internal bleeding. Luckly we found out after he had nosebleeds at the end. So I don't know if that risk is worth the short term benefits. Not one valid medical site can confirm or recommend long term use of flax seed oil or fish oils. They state EATING the fish but not consuming these oil supplements. I don't condone Miralax. but what I do like are the other numerous ideas bee has offered. Changing and monitoring diet, adding lots of fluids, giving fiber juice, eating more fiber, removing caffeine and chocolate (diaretic foods), adding exercise, making the child sit twice a day on the toliet just to play, treating the psych part of tolieting, etc. does a fantastic job at providing various plans and other options. The disorders you listed are not proven. It was one study with a limited scope of patients. We need more studies on that however the supplement companies publish it as fact. Go towww.aap.org for more details. (american academy of pediatrics) They still are not convinced it is a sound long term plan.Sure there are perfect no risk regimens and they have to be done on a consistent pattern, controlled, and done all together. One method or treatment cannot be done without all the other 10 that we've listed. firsthand stated that, as well as I and other parents on the list. There is no miracle cure but if you put it all of the methods together you may get more days of sucess verses nothing or worse outcomes. Here we learned at our cancer centers that it also contributes to prostate cancer. Not good. And that is for grown males. What does it do for developing male children? KWIM?YOU DO what you see fit. You know your child best. YOU are the parent. We are not. Doctors are not either. So you know best. My goal was to just share some research and findings and you decide what you think is best. I just don't want parents to think it is totally safe, that there are not huge risks with these supplements when there are and that it's not a one stop solution.GOOD LUCK!So some is optimal and too much is bad...it seems like everything else to me, there is always a trade off when supplementing with drugs or natural remedies. It is risk vs. benefit for the individual. Also, cod liver oil is NOT the same as fish or flax oil. This can be confusing.I think if one is going to look at the negatives you also need to weigh the positives and compare to the other available options which can often present worse risks. The point here often seems to be what would be better than miralax so it is important to weigh the negatives of miralax against the negatives of the alternative. Also, seeing as for so many, miralax ends up being used long term (which it is not recommended for) that adds another consideration. Is it worth trying some flax/fish oil to see if it works? Maybe. BTW- these oils are also proven to reduce the risks of heart disease and help in the treatment of excema, add and a multitude of disorders.I treat my kid based on the most pressing issue at the time. We will never find the perfect no-risk regimen. It is frustrating and we often have to use our best judgement and intuition. With regard to chronic constipation, the importance of addressing that issue becomes paramount (that's why I even resorted to Miralax, mineral oil, suppositories etc.)Until they do a study on people suffering severe chronic constipation and the risks vs. benefits of fish/flax oil on those people, I think we have to be open to trying different things.Just my sorry-if-not-too-humble opinion.
