Guest guest
Hi Tricia, my daughter has spit on and off usually when trialing a new med and/or dose adjustments. Spitting I believe can be either a compulsion (triggered when confronted by or someone mentions something contaminated) or a tic. If in your daughter it is a compulsion, it can be treated with CBT/ERP as any other compulsion. Ticcing is a common problem in kids with OCD and in some cases the tendency to tic can be unmasked by the SSRI taken to treat the OCD. I mention this since if this is a tic in your daughter's case, it may have been triggered by the SSRI increase. Also you say that if you talk to her about it, she spits several times. I've noticed with my daughter that I can trigger a tic by talking about it. In fact she's asked me please not to mention this or that tic, or tics generally since this " gets them going again. " Anyway spitting seemed in my child to be more a tic, since it wasn't associated with any anxiety or bad thought. It stopped and has not returned the past three years since she was started on Risperdal. Risperdal is actually an antipsychotic but has been found to quell tics when given as an adjunct to an SSRI for OCD. In my child, the OCD and tics seem to take turns, or wax and wane opposite of each other. When her OCD symptoms are low are usually when the tics become more noticeable and frequent. You may want to mention this new symptom of spitting to her doctor, and see whether s/he thinks a med adjustment is in order. Guest guest
Hi, Pat! What is with this spitting? my son started to do this this summer? He doesnt spit at people, but spits also when he gets mad? Is this their communication? I am somewhat glad to see others share the same problems. We have so much in common, even if autism is so different in everyone. Thanks for your input. You have so much insight. Guest guest
Kathy, my experience with Karac is that some of his spitting was a form of communication, i.e. "I don't won't to read any more" Some of it was that he enjoyed watching the spit drip, and some of it was he just thought that was a good thing to do with saliva that collected in his mouth. I handled it in various ways. In the first instance I said, "Karac, just say, "no read"; you don't have to spit. In the second situation I said, "We can go to the creek and watch the spit make circles in the water, It is ok to spit outside." In the last situation, I said, "swallow". It took some time, but now he says, "no read or whatever"He spits in the creek, and last, he swallows. LOL, Pat K Hi, Pat! What is with this spitting? my son started to do this this summer?
