Guest guest
I use one for my daughter she is autistic but the reason that I got it was she was not walking and weighed 40lbs and with her walker she would get tired and take us a very long time to get to the store. I told her doctor that I couldn't lift her up because of my back I am only suppose to lift 20lbs and under. Her dr. said lets get her set up with a placard. So we did now my husband has one as well just for when they go out. However she can walk, run, and things we still use it but I am sure when it expires we won't have it again. Hope this kinda helps Twilla > > Subject: Disabiled/Handicapped Placard > To: AutismBehaviorProblems > Date: Thursday, December 18, 2008, 3:25 AM > Hi all, > Just wondering if anyone uses a handicapped placard on > their car for their autistic child. > The idea has crossed my mind a few times lately while > taking my little guy out. Guest guest
Hi Deanna! My name is Stacie! Welcome to the group! I have 3 kids! Lexie is 13 and NT, is 10 and was dxed with a tic disorder 1 1/2 years ago, and in May she was dxed with Sensory Integration and high functioning Autism after she went and was evaluated at the child service center by the Autism specialists! I thought she had SI because of some of the things she did! My son is 5 and was finally, after fighting for him for years was dxed with low functioning Autism at the end of Sept! I knew all along he had it and everyone kept telling me no! He was dxed with a seizure disorder a year ago this past Oct. In sept he scored a 48 IQ so he is moderate MR, has SI and visual proccessing disorder too! He went to a special needs school for preschool for 2 years and now goes to a school in our district that is a diagnostic K class for Autism that just started this year and there are only 3 kids, a teacher and 3 aides! Your son sounds like mine! And yes I am going to get a handicap thing for my car. And also a sign for my car that says there is a chils with Autism in case of an accident so they would know and I want one for his bedroom window too so if there were a fire! I also want to get him an I'd bracelet because he is an escape artist too! I want to get a sign for our street too but I have heard that is not a good idea because of child preditors. They actually have Autism ones now too!StacieSent via BlackBerry by AT&TFrom: "deannasommars" Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2008 08:25:14 -0000To: <AutismBehaviorProblems >Subject: Disabiled/Handicapped Placard Hi all, Just wondering if anyone uses a handicapped placard on their car for their autistic child. Guest guest
We have a placard on our vehicle for our 4 year old autistic son. We were frightened that he would get hit by a car. He would see our car and bolt through the parking lot before we could blink. Our pediatric neurologist assigned it for life for us. I utilize it at Walmart and large lots but generally try not to when we can get "rock star" parking anyway at the smaller places. Use the placard...don't feel guilty about it... Guest guest
Deanna My name is twilla Bridges I was talking to the firefighter chief I can't remember what command but he was the next to the highest He told me that they don't put things in the kids windows anymore do to the predators just like the road signs. He also recommend not putting one in the car. However what he did was he took all my info and family info for the house how many kids and medicine and health issues and special needs kids he basically covered all aspects he turned that into the 911 dispatcher so any time that there is a call made from my house or cell phone they have all that on file my autistic child, shes deaf, no communication, feeding issues, and vision impaired, they also have my youngest who is in the crib. I described where there bedrooms where. If there is a fire aor any other medical emergency they recommended putting all info in the refrigerator in a empty pill bottle with all the info on paper about everyone in the house they said there is usually one person that goes to the rifriderator the top shelf is where they like to keep it or on the door shelf so they can see it right away. For the car thing they recommend putting stickers on the car seat They said on the base for the smaller child and I forgot with the older child But I haven't done that yet. That info would also include medical things like autisum who the child is age and birthday and emergency number and person to contact in emergency if you or whoever couldn't respond. The sign thing in the road I have one put up for my deaf child we live in a sub division the sign is like 500 ft from our house an donly a few of the neigbors know that she is deaf and has all the medical problems I also have asked for there help if she should out to contact us. She never has which is good. I hope this will be of some help. Yes try to get the placard. Mine helped me to because she got ssi disability. Guest guest
Hi, Stacie...I would worry about one on his window as well...Talk to your local fire-chief and or police (Twilla mentioned this earlier)....talk to police probably, and they'll tell you if they recommend it for his bedroom window. Guest guest
Hi Stacie, I have been reading about your ongoing plight with . It sounds like an awesome program arrangement for your little pup, but from your posts it sounds like it has been a struggle. Why oh why is it always a fight with the schools? We had an IEP today and I feel like I've been run over by the special ed bus! LOL That's another story! Looks like my little guy- Seth- will have another year of preschool. I'm happy with that. Seth is dev delayed also. He has low muscle tone and a mild mitochondrial dysfunction which significantly affects his growth and energy. He has 2 brothers: 7 and 16 that have SI issues. He also has a 13 yo sister that is NT. I am strongly considering applying for the handicapped placard. We are going to ask the city for a street sign that is a caution for " blind/deaf child " One of the autism organizations recommends this over an " autism " because drivers might not " get " what to watch out for. What do you do for your little escapee? Were you the one considering a therapy dog? This is something I am very interested in. Any advice you have about anything is welcome. Thanks Deanna > Hi Deanna! My name is Stacie! Welcome to the group! I have 3 kids!
