Teri,

Yes, toes can cramp. I pretty much keep them from doing so by daily

foot massages and stretching of my toes, plus wearing good supportive

shoes like New Balance for Women that are made for women's feet. I am

on my feet alot and frequently change shoes also. You might want to

drink Tonic Water and see if that helps at all (has quinine in it, a

muscle relaxant) Talk to your orthotist too because custom orthotics

may help offset pressure.

Hi again! I do not see an orthotist. Should I be? I also have that

right foot pain that we discussed in an earlier post. Do I need a

referral to see one? And in your " expert " opinion should I be??

Thanks Gretchen!! your the best!!

Since being diagnosed with CMT I have pretty much assumed everything is related

when it comes to muscle/tendon pain. While inflamed I try to find a stretch that

really makes it hurt, and then once the inflamation goes away, incorporate that

stretch into my routine.

It'll be in the mid 70s here in San Diego today.

Shameless plug: I manage an ocean front condo vacation rental here in San Diego,

located on the boardwalk in Mission Beach. If you'd be interested in getting

away, I can offer some really great off season rates. It's a second story unit,

so stair climbing is required. If you are interested in more information, feel

free to email me.

Hi Teri,

It's hard to say, but you just * might * be more comfortable in some

custom (in-shoe) orthotics. What I'd recommend is seeing a Foot

Orthopedist first for an exam. Then ask who he/she recommends for an

Orthotist. Don't know how " expert " that is (lol) but that is probably

the most logical step. Or if your Internist knows your feet and knows

CMT, you might also ask him/her for a referral. Originally, it was my

Internist who suggested Stefan at Swiss Balance for me and wow, what

joy!

If you have trouble finding an Orthopedist or Orthotist let me know.

Keeping persons happy and on their feet, and out of pain should be the

#1 goal of both.

Hiya Teri!

Dunno about toe cramps, but my right foot toe keeps moving, wriggling, all by

itself! I call it little restless naughty fellow! And, I still remember the

doctor in my tiny hometown scratching his head when I consulted him.

Reema,

You poor thing! That must be maddening!! I have also had a strange

thing happening to me when I go to be. It is like my muscles jump

and really jerk me! It is always the thigh muscle. It happens every

night, and it is strange. At least with CMT it is never a dull

moment!!

The etiology of leg cramps can be metabolic -- a lack of potassium in

the diet -- or responses to the signals sent by the damaged peripheral

nerves. I had horrible leg and foot cramps that made my left leg look

like a ballet dancer on point.

I eat potassium rich foods (bananas, green vegetables, etc.) and also

take a prescribed potassium supplement for any loss from a diuretic.

Knowing my cramping problems, my MD sister-in-law recommended I take

800 mg of magnesium. In the five years I have been taking magnesium, I

only remember 2 cramping episodes.

I take just magnesium,, not the supplement offered with calcium.

What can I say -- it works for me!
