My son (the life long constipated one) is actually the one that was on Miralax for a couple of months in 2006, my daughter never had it. They both have been tested and neither one has RTA or kidney problems. That being said, I do think their diet this summer was much more acidic because it was so protein heavy, not as much fruit and veggies (due to oxalate, salicylate/phenol intolerances). We have since worked on correcting that, and also give alkaline water. I will have to look into the vitamin K protocol, I wasn't aware that there was another method to adequately handle oxalates with a leaky gut involved other than dietary reduction of oxalates (and of course the calcium, probiotic and

other supps to help somewhat). Since the oxalates are clearly an issue for them both (behavior and physical symptoms; we have been able to reduce my daughter's ADHD meds by 84% since LOD), we need to continue to reduce until the underlying hyperabsorption issue is resolved. With my daughter, I know the constipation will resolve once we can get more carbs and fiber back into her. Sigh, it is always something!!

Re: response to angi / magnesium

I tried my son on the low oxalate diet and found it counter-intuitive and constipating as well. I found the vitamin K protocol was a better way to deal with oxalates for my son.Regarding magnesium -- it can have an alkalinizing effect too. I think that is why my son needed so much of it -- it was being used by the kidneys to lower his acidity. I think there's a group of ex-miralax people that may have renal tubular acidosis.Any behavior or visible changes to use as a guideline? > Has anyone had experience or suspected that magnesium interferes with digestion? My kids have been on high dosages of magnesium for quite a while (my 4 yr old son has dealt with life long constipation, my daughter constipated this year since doing the low oxalate diet), and have been on magnesium malate for a few months since we discovered they were not tolerating the citrate well in magnesium citrate. Their stools always have undigested food (most noticeably peas and papaya) that I can't help but wonder if the magnesium is causing - perhaps the magnesium is working as an antacid? Even with digestive enzymes, their stool isn't looking any better. I have tried to change the timing of taking it (from 30min-1hour before food to after food) but it

started backing them up. We don't have the choice of trying other things for the constipation because they are extremely intolerant to most supplements and food due to severe leaky guts.
