Guest guest
Hi I read your post and had to respond. My wife and I are expecting twins!! I have CMT X and I'm 27. I too played many sports when I was young and now see more effects of the disease. I was under the understanding that if I have sons they will not be affected and that girls will always " carry " the gene but are most often not affected. Do you know the chances of girls being affected by CMT X? You mentioned the you found out your girls " had " CMTX. I thought it was definite that they would but that they wouldn't show symptoms or that their symptoms would be mild. Also I have read a lot about Preimplimentation Genetic Diagnosis. Your daughters could use this to have CMT free kids. It's expensive though. If we have girls we plan to start saving to help them cover the cost of having this done later in life. Just thought I would pick your brain since we both have CMTX and will have twins soon. Wade
Guest guest
Hi, Males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. Females have 2 X chromosomes. If a male passes on the Y, he will have a son. If he passes on the X, he will have a daughter. If you have CMTX, the affected gene resides on the X chromosome. If you are a male with CMTX and have a daughter, you will always, 100%, pass the affected gene on. If you are a male CMTX and you have a son, you will never, 0%, pass the affected gene on. Women with CMTX have a 50% chance of passing the affected X chromosome on to each child they have. I'm female and have CMTX. I do exhibit symptoms of CMT, though they are not severe. I have 2 sisters. One doesn't really show any symptoms, but 2 of her sons do. The other is pretty severly affected. I have 3 daughters, 2 have it. The third, I don't know. She runs track and is a lot less clumsy than the rest of us. If you would like any more info, please let me know. Tonya
