Guest guest
Deanna, My advice is that you have any ? about it I would wait. I have a 6 yo grandson who is in 1st grade now and my daughter and I both wish we would have waited to send him. We were advised to go ahead and send him because he was not academically delayed and it would be better to keep him with kids in his own age group. Well that is all well and good but socially he struggles and he has a fair amount of behavior problems. We can't help but wonder if we had kept him back would his maturity level been more appropriate. And the fact of the matter is that in his 1st grade class he has many classmates that are now turning 8 and no one really notices... there kids it's just not a big deal to them. Guest guest
two cents.. the thing we need to be respectful of is that this is a "behaviorl problem" group in nature...some of us pray through our children's behavioral struggles and some do not....so we need to, Like Pat K says, and make sure we post it in the subject line...this gives other parents the choice to read or not........ OK, I'm going to bed, cause I'm getting goofy... lol --- and wordy...and can't spell (y) e To: AutismBehaviorProblems Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2008 10:05:27 PMSubject: Re: Starting Kindergarten- or should we? Guest guest
Hi Deanna, is 8 and in second grade. He is able to be in the reg. ed classroom with a full time aide. Some of his work has to be modified. Anything concrete can get easily- addition, subtraction, telling time, sight reading but he is behind on almost all conceptual things. I know that going forward more and more of his work will be based on conceptual thinking so we are really working on this. His behaviors sometimes get in the way but we have been able to work through them with the addition of meds (i don't like giving them but the changes I have seen are really great), a behavior plan and a token system. earns a card with a picture of our home computer and the words 5 extra minutes for each task he does like a worksheet, reading a book etc. he can earn up to 1/2 an hour of extra computer time a day. This really motivates him since he loves the computer. Everyone at his current school is great. Even the secretaries in the office know and talk to him every day. The principal is awesome and so are his teachers and aide. We are truly blessed. did start early puberty this summer and we have some trouble with OCD issues. It has been a struggle but the meds and behavior plans are really helping. I would love to hear more about Seth and how he is doing. Have a very merry Christmas! asked me if Santa would bring him 20 presents this year. Up until the last year he didn't understand Christmas but always loved the decorations. This year he is very excited and keeps saying the day and the date. Today is Tuesday December 23- NOT Christmas and then he frowns. It is really cute. Wishing your family a Very Merry Christmas and I am looking forward to getting to know you better in the new year. Kellie Subject: Re: Starting Kindergarten- or should we?
