Guest guest
I talked to these people at a grassfed convention here in Minnesota. They do feed some corn but not much and NO soy. I will also vouch for there cheese and butter. Both are a rich golden color and the tastes are out of this world. Just wish they were raw. Guest guest
If I remember correctly from the farm-tour it was a seasonally and individually dependent blend of corn sileage, hayledge, corn and minerals. I know they were very concerned about the calcium content of their soil and were investigating ways to increase that to lower dependence on other feedstuffs. They were also participating in some pilot projects with some environmental soil and water scientist from the Univ of Minnesota. Much more important than the ratio of grass, I believe, is the quality of the grass itself. We have a fairly steady growing season that allows them to get growing green grass from mid-spring through October. It's evident in the color and flavor of the butter. I have never seen anything more yellow or taste more rich. If you want more specifics about the ration that they use (whether there's any soy or anything else less than optimal) you'll probably need to contact Dan or Muriel French directly. Another benefit by the way, is that I think they have a mixed herd that they're slowly transitioning to more pasture friendly breeds like jerseys and swiss. -----Original Message----- From: Roman [mailto:r_rom@...] Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 7:01 PM Subject: Re: Grassfed butter source --- Kroyer <skroyer@...> wrote: > Cows receive a minimum of 65% of their diet from grass during the growing season, and are housed in sheltered pastures year-round. Guest guest
All, There are several other sources of grassfed and / or raw butter listed in the back of the quarterly Wise Traditions, from the Weston A. Price Foundation. Some of these are out of butter for the season (until April?), but I know of at least one which still has butter to ship. Do folks want me to list these sources (although I highly recommend having your own " Wise Traditions " !)? Guest guest
I should be getting my first Wise Traditions whenever the next issue comes out, until then, I for one would be interested in those sources...particularly for raw butter. I wonder if they can legally ship to Minnesota though. It would be kind of strange if they can, since it's illegal to sell it in MN. Hmmm, if this keeps growing in popularity, will there be no-knock police dairy raids...will the BATF change it's name to BATFD (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Dairy. It should be funny, but it really isn't... -----Original Message----- From: leslie_kosar@...
