Guest guest
Geri, Have you tried MSM or Glucosamine to help your knees? Has your doc every mentioned Physical Therapy for exercises to strengthen your knees? A couple of the exercises I do in aquatics are excellent for knees, they can be done on land too. I don't have knee issues - I did dislocate a knee back in the 80s, though - was too tired, trying to do too much after a return from a vacation. I faithfully do these exercises (and all the others) because I want to stay in shape and not need 'mechanical' parts someday. Do you wear any support on your knees when you're out, or AFOs? Could your AFOs need a check-up? By all means, go out, go out, go out! It is easy to let things like this get you down. I hope you can get out and enjoy the signs of Spring everywhere soon. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
Hi all I'm new to this posting but when i saw the knee joints topic i just had to write. My name is Debbie. I'm from the central coast of nsw, Australia. I have had bad knees for many years. Approx 13 yrs ago I had lateral releases done on both of my knees due to recurrent disclocations. That worked for me up until May last year. I slipped on a wet floor and tore the hamstring in my right leg and then a monthlater, as my leg was weaker than usual, I fell and dislocated my right knee. Tt is very painful. Luckily someone was with me and put it back into place. Now again, last weekend, I fell once more and disclocated my left knee. I had seen an orthaepedic surgeon last June and he informed me that if I had any further dislocations he could do a surgical procedure on both knees to end the dislocation problem forever. Have any of you people had surgery to the knees and if so how successful? Looking forward to hearing from you. Debbie
Guest guest
Geri, I also have terrible knees, 45 min of walking and I am unable to get back in the car. left one beens repaired twice and the right likes to lock up {trys to bend backwards}. Yup,It is embarrasing when store employees/fellow friends come running to pick me up off the floor. I tell everyone jokingly I tripped over a cigarette butt. I also fall down unexpectedly, without notice due to weak ankles. So its a crap shoot for me to guess whats next. Keep pushing yourself and try to stay active,I spent 1.5 years laying in bed not wanting to be a burden on my family after the accident until the day I relized there has got to be more. Find activities you can comfortably participate in, thats the hardest part for me ...discovering my limitations. Keep pressing on, never give up. > I have trouble with my knees...if I turn wrong..they go out of joint.Gees that hurts and it is scary looking too.How about you?? > I just can't help but I cry when that happens. Of course when it happens I'm around a bunch of people and then I feel even worse and more sad.I'm always the only disabled one there I feel like I should just say home most of the time. Why make others uncomfortable. > > Geri > >
Guest guest
Hi Geri, I had this problem for many years till eventually my orthopaedic surgeon did a 'patella realignment' 7 yrs ago, the knee never slipped again and still doesn't, however the whole knee now needs replacing and many surgeons won't consider doing it on a CMT patient as I would only get about 2 years out of it, but mine will. So it is 2 years of no pain in the knee or carry on as I am - I think I will go for the first option. Love to all. Jill - UK
Guest guest
PS Geri, I have just read Gretchen's response, I was recommended to take 1500 mg Glucosamine and it really does help, I dread to think how bad it would be without the tabs but that is for the pain not the slipping of the knee unfort. Guest guest
I also have bad knees, to the point where I am considering a double knee replacement. It seems that due to joint instability I have worn the cartilage completely between the kneecaps and the femurs. Hurts a LOT. Anyway I have found that the athletic knee braces you can buy in the drugstore help a lot to keep the knees in line. Worth a try anyway.
