Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am very upset about a bad experience I had at the movies today. The movie theater here allows people in wheelchairs and 1 guest in free. Well I do not use a wheelchair at all times, but when I go into a mall or large place like that I do. The movies is in the mall. One of the managers made a comment that he seen me helping my mom get the wheelchair out of the trunk so I must be faking and I shouldn't take advantage of them. I understand that people do fake this but he was extremely rude during the whole conversation. After I got in (free) I complained to the head manager and I was crying because I was so embarrassed. Then the other manager told me I should just admit that I was faking. Then my mother snapped on him and I cried more because everyone was looking at me like I was a freak. I was thinking about having someone from MDA or my doctor write them a note. They need to know that not everyone who uses a wheelchair is confined to it at all times and do walk and drive and get out their own chairs at times. I am still crying about this. Any advice would be appreciated. Jen
Guest guest
Ignorance of this nature truly makes me pissy! Jen, I hope you know you do not walk alone in this type of matter. I agree that many don't understand CMT, but I believe the rude attitude and the overall judgement that met you at the movies is what has truly taken you for a loop. I also agree that you should have a doctor write a letter in addition to printing materials on their behalf, however I would not just send it to the manager at the local level. I would send a letter to their headquarters or public relations manager. This is a time where you can find your voice and educate many. I know it is a pain, hurtful at best, but this too shall pass. Find your power in this situation. Don't let them get the best of you. Denedria *smile*
