I have a question to the group. Has anyone's child had an abnormal MRI? One of my son's MRI came back abnormal today. The neurologist said it could be one of two things: the first possibility is brain death, deep in the gray matter located in the left lobe; or secondly, he has a brain tumor. I don't know how freaked out I should be. We're supposed to have another MRI as soon as possible, to confirm one of the two possibilities.

yes we had a abnormal Mri with our daughter. The gray matter didn't develope. It is call delayed mylein. There are several areas of her brain that has delayed mylein. There is a chance it could grow and they think that with her progress now and how she is learning new stuff that it is developing. However, there is something called demyleinization. where it did develop but later regressed. There is a name for it but I can't remember it. You might ask them if it is a mylein issue. I have never heard the term brain death. Ask them if that might be the same thing as demylinization. Good luck and hope this was helpfull. Will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Sara,I am so sorry to hear about your sons mri results. My 16yr

son has an area in the left frontal lobe that reflects brain damage.

Dr.s were not sure if the cause was brain trauma resulting in death

of an area of brain or alternating hemiplegia,a seizure disorder my

son has that caused the abnormal findings. They found the area in mri

studies done when he was a toddler. Now my youngest son also had an

abnormal mri wich they attribute to premature birth and a brain bleed

or brain trauma or biological causes,in the left frontal lobe. My

sons did not have markers for tumors.

I wonder how common abnormal mri findings are in children with

autism. Did your son's Dr. give you any reasons outside of tumor that

would cause this area of damage?

I was told its very hard to trace the original event or cause after

the area is found in a non-event mri.

How very stressful for you and your family waiting on more test

results. I understand what you are going through.

Hugs,best wishes

Tishanne

Thanks Twilla. When your daughter had her MRI, did they have to repeat the test using a contrast material? That is what the doctor is ordering for Mark. Can they tell from the MRI that delayed mylein or demyleinization has occured or do they use a different test? How old is your daughter, and what is her level of impairment? Mark is very low functioning. He is almost 8 years old, but is cognitively an 18 month old level. He has very little speech, and severe OCD.

no they didn't use any material stuff. They just did the mri and they could tell. My daughter is six and to is very low functioning and in abut eighteen months range too. She also has cerabal palsey. autisum, failuure to thrive and totally deaf, and some vision problems. She was born with a cataract in her eye. We were told that delayed mylein has a lot to do with cerabal palsey as well as autisum, They said that what it is is if you disect a electrical cord. Take the outside layer off the plug inside is wires that are connected. Well with the brain it is the same except that the connectors are not connected and it acts as though it is shortin g out. I hope this makes sense. You can google delayed mylein as well and there is alot of stuff on it.

Hi Twilla,

I've heard of the mylein sheath deteriorating (like the condition in Lorenzo's Oil), but I've never heard of it associated with autism. It's all very scary.

 Hi Stacie,

Mark's EEG was normal, as was his bloodwork. We're suppose to reschedule another MRI ASAP. She seemed to think it was urgent. I made an appointment at Shands, with their chief ped neurologist. I don't want to mess around if it really is a mass of some sort.

Hi Sara, I am sorry your son had an abnormal MRI, and hope it turns out to

be a benign condition. May I ask, was your son born prematurely or suffered

lack of oxygen to teh brain at birth, or some kidn of head injury? This

could all cause grey or white matter damage. The white matter condition is

called periventricular leukomalacia or PVL, but your child's doc talked

about grey matter damage and I don't remember what that's called. It sounds

scary if there is no known cause for this problem. I myself probably would

have an abnormal MRI (I never had one since when I was younger MRIs were

still very expensive and new so they used CT-scans on me), but that is

because I was born prematurely, had a brain bleed in infancy and have

hydrocephalus ( " water-on-the-brain " ). Anyway I hope it turns out as well as

possible.

Hi Astrid,

Mark was 2 weeks late. The doctors did stress tests the last couple of months due to minimal movement. They had to use forceps during delivery. He had swelling on the left side of his head for a couple weeks. I don't know if this has anything to do with his condition. Thanks for asking.
