Group, Boy does this sound familiar. I used to weigh around 130 to 150 lbs

depending on the level of prednisone I was on. Now that I am down to 9mg per

day and having been through a 6 month course of severe edema and very low

albumin I weigh 104lbs. At the beginning of 1998 I weighed 109 and managed

to get up to 115 about a month ago. I started feeling a lot more energetic

and decided to pick rhubarb and make jam for my family. In three days I lost

8 lbs. It seems in order for me to gain weight right now I must do

absolutely nothing or my metabolism just races ahead. I eat everything in

sight, including a protein supplement, drink 6 - 8 glasses of water a day.

If I drink any more water I have no room for food. SOLUTION - need one

soon or I'll be blowing away in the wind. ( I am 5 ft 3 inches tall)

right? However, I was weighed in a doctor's office yesterday and tipped

the scales at 9l, yes, 91 pounds. I was 94 a week ago. Yikes, at this rate

I'll be the Invisible Woman by Christmas. I'm usually around 102. Was

always a lightweight, but this is rediculous. Any director would quickly

snap me up for a death-camp scene. I eat well, but how can anyone maintain

their weight on veggies, a little fruit, limited carbs, and a few legumes.

I'm one of Dr. Franco's patients. So, I get lots of vitamins and minerals

through supplements including UltraImflamX which has 200 calories per scoop

of which I take 2 per day. Dr. F thought this would help with the weight

loss. I love the stuff, but it's a washout as far as weight maintenance let

alone weight gain. I'm on the verge of eating sugar and fats just to gain

some weight. Believe me, it would only take a little nudge since I LOVE sweets.

Sheila - I tried sugar, fats, etc. They don't help put

weight on. They taste REAL GOOD though! One day (not too

long ago) when I was real depressed I ate a cheeseburger, 2

Hershey bars and 3 cinnamon rolls in addition to 3 square

meals. No change! I don't recommend this and I feel kind

of guilty but I didn't gain any weight.

and it's a problem? I'm having the time of my life! Before LDN, for 20 years, I could never get down below 135. I longed for the old days of 120 and a flatter stomach. My metabolism feels like it did when I was a teen. I'm loving it!

Yeah... funny that. When I was 135+ and 140+ I was being warned how unhealthy I'd be, I should lose some, I'm looking a little heavy.

When I was 124-127 I heard that I lost weight, looking good... and those were 2 good years. But when I showed up this July at 114, oh, that's too much, you better not lose more, we'd better watch.

So since July I weigh myself and take my BP at my chiro's office, so it's the same scale and same BP machine.

114 in July, 120 in September, 117 since. I'd say I've levelled off. We'll see how it goes in the future. I don't worry about enjoying meals when I'm hungry any more :)

Yes and no. My heart issues have cleared to the point I'm noticing my

underlying fibromyalgia, which I guess is a good thing! I'm working on

my treadmill, gingerly. I'm learning what foods trigger me, and while I

don't think I'm ready for the full-on SCD I'm noticing certain

combinations of foods just don't work for me--potatoes and cream, for

instance. Fried potatoes don't bother me, but potatoes in soup with

cream don't sit well, and I don't think it's the cream because I can

drink that straight with no troubles. So gradually I'm figuring this

stuff out. I wish it were easier.

Hi all. I have CMT1a. Diagnosed last fall. I’m 44 yrs old. I saw Dr.Shy in

Detroit who told me to take good care of myself (especially my feet and joints).

I am 25 lbs overweight and would like to lose it but have tried several diets

and can’t seem to get it off.

My hospital has a program called New Directions. It involves losing weight

rapidly through low cal diet involving 2 shakes and a sensible meal. The

program is headed by a cardiologist and nurse practitioners. It puts the body

in a state of ketosis. During the weight loss “journey” there are weekly

classes that help you identify why one overeats and the goal is to educate on

nutrition

and exercise before maintenance begins. I know many people who have had success

losing and maintaining.

Can being in a state of ketosis be harmful for someone with CMT? I know if the

body doesn’t have enough fuel, it can burn muscle tissue and as we all know this

is the last thing we with CMT want. The nurse practitioner told me that while

in ketosis the body burns fat and that the diet has just the right combination

of protein and carbs. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Best to loose weight slowly, through cutting back on calories, trans

fats and increased exercising. Anything that causes drastic weight

loss of more than 2 lbs. a week can be harmful to one's heart -

whether one has CMT or not.

Taking " good care " of yourself is good advice. Remember, the excess

pounds didn't come on overnight and they can't be lost overnight

either.

My own experience with daily exercise and cutting back on calories has

worked well for me and still does. It is a " lifestyle " that is

centered on discipline.

My appetite has been a real roller coaster, & I have lost a little

weight recently; dispite prednisone :). I find though that when I do

feel hungry I usually reach for something sweet/high fat or even

worse...a shop bought icecream (I'm lactose intolerant).

Dispite being able to quit smoking a few years ago, my willpower when

food is involved is weak.

Weight loss must be desirable surely, less weight on joints etc.
