The myths about gum

Gum is suppose to a)help you to burn extra calories thereby making us

thinner, b)boost cognitive abilities so we should give it to students

while they are taking tests and they will do much better, and c)make

teeth healthier by strengthening the enamel.

That's pretty funny considering how many people in the U.S. chew gum

and we have the highest obesity rates ever, some of the lowest test

scores in the world, and I'm not sure how are teeth are, but isn't

brushing and flossing better than chomping on a piece of gum?

Maybe instead of chewing gum people could exercise and eat right. I

mean, really, how many calories do they really think they are

burning? Maybe 20? Then they go and eat 2 cookies for 400 calories!

Also, students might do better on tests if they actually studied and

listened to the teacher!

Come on--it's ridiculous! I would bet money that gum chewing is

actually probably a main cause of all the acid reflux and digestive

problems. Think about it--the first stage of digestion is chewing

which causes the rest of the digestive system to kick in producing

gastric juices, etc. When a person chews gum, digestion begins, but

nothing ever gets down into the stomach to be digested. This can't

be a good thing. Also, it probably causes people to eat more because

of this overstimulated digestive system. Which in turns puts on the

pounds! Oh well--just a theory.
