Guest guest
Hi All; My 4 yo high functioning autistic daughter just had her first appt with a child psychiatrist. She has debilitating anxiety issues and extreme sound sensitivity, along with other ASD issues. Of course, I suspect she has congenital Lyme although I am just starting the journey of a diagnosis for myself... The doc prescribed liquid Prozac (2.5 mg/day) and Risperidol (0.25 mg 2x/day). She wants her to start the meds immediately, as my daughter will be starting school (JK )in September. I anticipate school to be an ordeal for her due to the loud noises, uncertainty, and the fact that she does not like being around other kids. I am unsure what to do... I would like a smooth transition to starting school but I'm unsure about the meds. The child psych appt was rushed and I did not get to discuss my many concerns. Any advice or comments welcome! Thanks, Kim
Guest guest
I was in a similar position years ago when my son was about 5 or 6. He was Rx'ed the same stuff and I elected not to do it. He also had extreme anxiety and sound sensitivity (which is MUCH better now). I ended up with an Environmental doctor and we added a lot of supplements and homeopathic remedies. This worked for us, but did take some time. Looking back, I am so very glad I went this way. When you read about all of the synthetic meds and the effects they have on a body, especially a young one, it can convince you pretty quickly. Here is something that I was reading the other day and really liked it for it's easy to understand explanations: http://jacobsonchiropractic.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/newest-gut.pdf It is not directly related to what you are asking, but is good at explaining about things not natural to the body and how the body reacts. I can also tell you that you may spend some time in later years trying to detox those very meds from your child's body. I have taken plenty of those medications myself over the years and while they may have helped with the anxiety issues, they did create other problems. Prozac in particular caused a major decrease in appetite for me. My son's Neuropsych just suggested Prozac for his OCD issues. I am sure it can be quite helpful in some. You just have to look at all the info on it, good and bad, and then decide. Maybe wait until school starts and then see. I did and was surprised at how well my son adapted to the situations. He has major transition issues, and I was worried about this, but he did well in the end. Guest guest
Kim, Just want to say another thing.... I'm a moderator on the SSRI list, which educates people about Serotonin Reuptake drugs. There are so many children who go into this type of interaction as merely somewhat "attention deficit" or even completely normal as in the study groups they did their drug studies on. The SSRI list was founded by a parent of a healthy 18 year old, who committed suicide after taking these drugs as part of the study. Prior to this, she was completely healthy, and happy. I've heard story after story of children given these drugs, My own nephew included, who became severely malnourished, angry, and violent, as it wasn't the RIGHT neurotransmitter they needed in their body. Lalama has discovered even another neurotransmitter in Octopamine, which really helps a lot of these kids, which is natural, yet unstudied as it's not a patented synthetic drug. There are Several Neurotransmitters in the body. Most doctors pull one out of the hat and say Here! They don't usually do specific tests to see which one a person is deficient in, or which one he's high and out of range on. Dr, Braverman has a book called The Edge Effect about this situation, and a visual response test that you can read, and write out your answers to, and it will tell you what neurotransmitter you probably need. Just a thought. Advice: Child Psych just prescribed meds My 4 yo high functioning autistic daughter just had her first appt with a child psychiatrist. Guest guest
Kim, I agree with . I would find a good homeopath to work with, even though it could take some time. I found a local homeopath by asking the employees at my local health food store for a reference. Also, an herbalist could also help. I use a tincture of valerian/passionflower at times with my son. Many people have good success with Bach flower remedies. There are many natureal options that are healing. Carol > > Kim, > > Have you considered a Homeopathic Physician for this condition? Guest guest
Having talked to hundreds of people on psych meds, I have no fondness for Prozac at all. Resperidol does work, but it only works a little and has side effects of continuous body movements that are permanent. I would say all the ones with schizophrenia that I have seen that have been on psych meds for many years, had these body movements. They are called tardive dyskenesia. I think psych meds should only be used in an extreme situations. If the parents absolutely have no choice due to needing to work and all, then sometimes the chid needs to have Resperidol to help out a little. My child that was on psych meds came off of all of his immediately upon starting biomedical treatments. On just ginger root and digestive enzymes, alone, he had less symptoms than all the various psych meds he was on, including Resperidol. My biggest concern with psych meds is the possibility of them interacting with biomedical treatments. I imagine one would have to look at their situation and choose what is best for them at that time. Thus, I understand there is what is best and then there is what one is able to do at a point in time. Have you tried any biomedical treatments yet to see what help they do to lessen symptoms? Guest guest
I have been lurking, but thought I would share my daughter's experience with this issue. My daughter had a neurotransmitter test done and it showed extremely high levels of dopamine and seratonin and low in gaba and others. She was prescribed 2 different creams (cannot take pills) to balance her neurotransmitters to help calm her during the day and sleep better at night. Just trying to show how many alternatives there are. -- Re: Advice: Child Psych just prescribed meds Kim, Just want to say another thing.... Guest guest
, I noticed you have a link to what appears to be the same SOTALightWorks laser as DE gave me and I posted on last night. Do you have sell the same light and is your price the same or better? I'd be interested to hear your experience supporting this with our kids. We are very interested in this one and did not know it was already being used with our kids. Thanks! Rita > > Kim, > > Have you considered a Homeopathic Physician for this condition? Guest guest
Hi Rita! I own a SOTA LightWorks device, which I love, but don't sell them at the moment. I do own the Sota lightworks list, where people can discuss and share their experiences using the device. There have been a couple people recently on the list who have discussed using it for detox of Lyme with good results, but it seemed that they had some detox reactions (Herx response) with it. So they knew it worked well, but had to really push the water, and other detox cleanses to keep up with it. I mainly use it for my family for strains, sprains, detox, and healing in general. I love the way you can set it on automatic, and it will go by itself, switching through the frequencies, for 30 minutes- then turn off by its self. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi All; Thanks so much for all the wonderful replies/advice!! I really appreciate others' input into this very stressful situation. Just a brief background on treatment history for my youngest daughter... I have 2 autistic children so we started her early on various DAN (you name it we tried it) and GFCFSF (then SCD, then back to GFCFSF). For the last 2 years we have been strictly adhering to the Yasko protocol, complete with all expensive testing and RNAs. Those that are familiar with Yasko will know the protocol recommends 80+ supps for specific genetic mutations etc. To be honest, all the calming supps recommended on this protocol aren't really touching her extreme anxiety, sound sensitivity, and OCD issues. I strongly suspect I need to research this Lyme induced autism angle, and pursue different biomed treatments to address the Lyme (and other co-infections should there be any). As you all know, it is going to take some time to get an accurate diagnosis for Lyme for my daughter. I am going to start with a diagnosis for myself as it will be less invasive. I am uncomfortable with the prescription meds prescribed by the child psych, and will think long and hard before they go near my child. Years of debilitating anxiety and accompanying behaviour difficulties make it tempting to see if the meds will work, but I would definitely prefer to find an alternative solution. To those of you who inquired if I have pursued homeopath -- I am presently on the waitlist for Houston Homeopathy Centre. I have already been anxiously waiting for 7 weeks for treatment from HCH. I have alot of interest in all of the biotools discussed on this site and DK's methods of treatment as well. We are on a very limited budget after 2 years of Yasko, so I have to choose the most cost effective option. Thanks again to all who offered advice! I will consider every option :-) Kim
