Hi, my name is Maureen Gerecke. I live in northern California, about an our

north of San Francisco. I have been married for 23 years and have two children,

a daughter, who is a junior in college and a son, who is a high school enior.

My son was diagnosed with CMT when he was 13. I was diagnosed 20 years ago, at

the age of 24 with CMT. I started wearing AFOs when I was 34 and now have

recently switched to SAFO braces that I love. They are made from a soft silicone

and I can wear my regular shoe size. If anyone would like to know more about

them, please don't hesitate to ask me more. I am a huge fan.

I was an elementary school teacher for 25 years and had to retire early, last

December, due to the progression of neuropathy in my hands and feet. I have a

daily swimming routine at a health club close by that has an indoor pool and

find aqua exercises a huge help.

Losing weight has been my biggest challenge. Any extra weight on my feet is

very difficult, so that is my focus for self-care at the moment. I really want

to lose 30 pounds.

I just got back from Maui and was able to go snorkeling off of the boat and

accessing reefs from the shore. It was so supportive to have my new braces on

that I can wear in the water.

I use voice activated software to save my hands from stress and it works very

well. It is Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.0. It is much better than the previous

version. It is faster to train and more accurate.

I am happy to know about your E-group and look forward to keeping informed

about CMT related issues and sharing resources.

Thanks so much for reading this introduction,

Maureen
