Hi -

My son had surgery a week ago to fix a cavus foot. He had three

procedures done and one of the things done was a tendon transfer. He

is still having a good amount of pain especially in that area. He is

on pain meds and we keep his leg elevated.

Has anyone had a tendon transfer done and if so what was your experience?

Thanks!

Carmella,

Yes I had Tendon Transfers. Both feet at the same time, in summer when

I was 10. I had plaster casts on both legs for 6 weeks and was in bed

most of that time. The last 2 weeks I had walking casts. I don't

remember any post op pain at all (was in the hospital for a week post

surgery), but when the casts came off, and my 'new' feet touched the

ground and the doctor said " start walking " - that's when I felt the

pain. So I got aspirin for that.

However, with each day I walked a bit more and also walked in the sand to

strengthen my feet muscles. By the time school started in September I was

walking all around in my new school shoes.

Carmella,

I think it depends on the extent of the surgery. My husband has CMT 1A and has

had many surgeries on his feet and I think all of them included tendon transfers

among many other things. Each of the surgeries he was in a cast for many weeks,

walking boots, walking

shoes, and then a brace.

The pain lasts a long time.

The last surgeon he had did so much that he was in the hospital for 3 days and

in pain for months (especially when he went from a cast to walking) and he has a

very high pain tolerance.

If he just had the surgery a week ago, I would still expect pain, check with

your doctor on the length of time to expect it. Like I

said, it depends on the extent of the surgery.

My older son and I both have had Tendon Transfer. I have nothing but wonderful

things to say about Tendon Transfer.

I wish my other son could have it done but he doesn't have a good tendon to

transfer.

Hi Carmella-

Both of my children had tendon transfers.Yes it is very painful

but well worth it. As they healed the pain lessened. My son had one leg at a

time but my daughter had both legs done at the same time. And like I said it was

very much worth the pain. Good luck to your son.

I had several tendon transfers done on my hand a number of years ago.It was a

painful procedure and took some time to get through the pain. In my case they

took tendons from my leg and rebuilt my hand, so both the hand and the leg hurt

for several weeks. Keep him on the pain medication until the pain is over.
