Hello everyone,

I have a problem and not sure where to turn. I have not posted in a while

because my son and I are currently homeless. We are living in a friends camper.

My husband and I are going thru a divorce. We are homeless because my electric

bill got up to $1600 because I couldn't keep up with it myself, since he refused

to get a job. The bill was in my name and now I will have a hard time getting

electricity in a new place. Do you have any ideas of places that will help

disabled people with utility bills?? I need to find a place to live and have

electric by winter.

Thanks,

Jen

Jen,

I am so sorry to hear this news. I'd suggest contacting the HUD

office for your state, here's the main site http://www.hud.gov/

alot of info there. Here's the main link for each State

http://www.hud.gov/homeless/hmlsagen.cfm

Our local utility company has a program to help that I had a doctor

sign a note- we still have high bills, just not as high. I'd check

with whoever is your local company.

Take care,

Lenka

Here where I am in So. Cal, both PG + E and The So. Gas Company offer

CARE programs for persons in need/with low income, on SSDI or SSI,

etc. A few simple forms are needed, then each year you are asked to

renew your status. These Utilities also offer Balanced Payment Plans,

whereby your heat and electricity bills can be averaged over a year -

you pay the same amount each month, whether it is December or August.

This can be helpful in budgeting, and not getting any whopping big

heat or electric bills in winter! (This is also at the link below)

Also you can get discounts if you need to have hotter heat for longer

in the winter or more cooling in the summer and have a disease like

ours that requires it. And for people with respiration needs, they

offer discounts too. The link for PG + E is

http://www.pge.com/res/financial_assistance/ The So. Gas Company is

at http://www.socalgas.com/residential/assistance/ with the same type

of programs to help people.
