Guest guest
Subway settles with Justice Department in disabilities case Washington Business Journal - 2:50 PM EDT Tuesday, July 31, 2007 by Killian Staff Reporter http://washington.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2007/07/30/daily 19.html Subway will have to renovate its 20,000 U.S. restaurants to help people with disabilities under a settlement with the Department of Justice. Milford, Conn.-based Doctor Associates Inc., the company that franchises Subway shops, was charged with violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. There was no monetary value attached to the settlement. Subway is the second largest quick-service chain behind Mc's. There are more than 70 Subways in D.C. proper, not including the hundreds in the Washington area overall. Under the settlement, Doctor Associates will conduct architectural surveys at each Subway to identify areas where it is hard for people with disabilities to get around, including the bathrooms. The company will then tell each operator how to address the violations. Each store is entitled interest-free loans to make the changes, according to the Department of Justice statement. Co-founders Fred DeLuca and Buck opened the first Subway in 1965.
