Hi ,

I have had so-so luck with Hanger. The 1st orthotist made a pair that I could

barely put on my feet. My feet bled and he kept reshaping them - until he went

on vacation. I then had to go to another orthotist (from the same office) who

said that their integrity was compromised due to all of the re- shaping 7 that

they probably should start all over. They didn't start over they just reshaped

them again. Another Hanger office was just ok. I found a good orthotist at

UCSF & will go back to him. If you live in N.Cal I will give you his info -

otherwise it might be good to get a recommendation for a specific person in your

area.

Good luck,

Chris

Hello ,

Yes I went to Hanger for my last AFOs and I not very happy with them...mine have

alot of straps and Velcro on them, the plastic feels heavy compared to my last

AFOs. " Very cumbersome!! " .My legs get sopping wet and a puddle forms behind my

heal..so I would say they don't fit right. I had them put holes for ventilation

they drilled the hole from the outside in...so the rough part in towards my

skin. Even though I wear socks the rough spots dig into my skin and have made

sores. The sweating I don't know what do about that...I get a rash from that and

even wear cotton socks...going back " again " to see what can be done. I wonder if

the plastic used for my AFOs are different then what I'm used too... and wonder

if I am having a reaction to it......so far not to happy but know others that

like Hanger...and have had good luck with them.

Where do you live? There are so many offices of Hanger. Some are good

and some are probably not that good. It's all a matter of the

orthotist and how he makes your AFOs.

I really like Wade Bader at Bader Orthotics in Tampa. He makes his with kevlar

and graphite so they are ligher and stronger. Plus he cuts out the backs like

metal braces so they are not as hot as some AFOs.

I don't live in Tampa but I go to him cause he does a good job and cares how

they fit and feel. I have flown in to Tampa and gotten casted and picked up my

AFOs the next day. That is service. He's not a big fan of Hanger because they

are trying to buy up all of the independent orthotists around. Wade will also

work with your local orthotist on a wholesale/vendor basis. Give him a try, you

might like him, I do.

I have recently started going to Hangar. I feel that as long as you

find an Orthotist that knows his craft well and takes time to listen to what you

tell them then, you are going to have AFOs that fit properly. I asked Dr.'s and

friends in the health insurance industry when I was looking for a new Orthotist.

And I am very pleased.

I've never used Hangar, but a rose is a rose is a rose. Or in this case, a

thorn. My most humble - yet experienced - opinion is orthotists in general suck,

and are only surpassed by social workers in their utter incompetence. lol ;-)

Unfortunately, we need them

(orthotists).

Hi , I had Hanger outside of Tampa Fl. make my AFO. He is a nice man, and

I still do not know a good orthotist from a not so good. He cares, and will

adjust it as needed, not that often, but I still do not understand why it has

to be so high. I just want something to pick up my left foot so I walk better.

Bob has told me about the one in Tampa, and you never know I may just try him.

Good luck.. Elaine

I've had three AFOs made at hangers. Overall, they were all well done.

The person who made my AFOs also recommended I try ones he designed

that have flexible ankles. I gave it a shot, and they did not work

out with my feet, since I have so little muscle strength in my feet

they were not good for me. I am too progressed in my disease for

those. I was tripping way too much for my taste. So, it was back to

the old fashioned ones for me. He made me a new pair and threw the old

ones away.

Hello ,

I just read your e-mail about the Hanger co. and wanted to share my positive

experience with them back in Philadelphia 1987. They were great to work with and

my AFOs after a few adjustments were comfortable. The AFO material in those days

was heavier than what is used today.I'm sure they are up to date on the new

material.

All the best,

Katharine
