I have tried to find anyone that could tell me how to exercise....I'm in a

wheelchair and would love to be able to get out of it...perhaps walk again?

Could try ! Any thoughts?

Geri,

First I would suggest asking your doc about exercise programs and then

referring you to a Physical Therapist for evaluation and to get you

started. Have you got a YMCA nearby that offers " Chair Exercise " classes? This

is a good way to get started too. (I don't mean wheelchair, but one sits in a

chair - this is a regular class of 30 at my gym, all ages, all walks of life)

Geri,

I have done leg lifts in my chair, or just pushing down like I'm

going to stand. Yt has at least kept me able to stand though I need to

hang on to things. I just found a weslo aerobic glide plus I'm going to try. You

sit on it and just push down not peddle.. I'll keep you

informed if it works for me. I do a lot of leg moves at night stretches and

lifts also.

Hi Geri,

One thing I would do is gentle stretching. Especially as if we sit a lot it

really tightens our hip flexors and hamstrings, making me get what I describe as

" enlegs " - really awkward movement, stiff legs, no way to have a " normal "

gait.

I am sure that a PT referral could give you some good stretching. To me the

stretching may be " light " as far as activity goes, but without it I feel awful

and I know the tightness impacts every part of my body (feet up).

Best wishes,

Donna
